This would have raised my blood pressure just a bit if it was me in the water for 12 hours..

I'd like to know what sort of boat they were in because if it sunk that fast that the epirb wouldn't deploy I don't want to be in one.. At least they got their lifejackets and had the presence of mind to tie themselves together.

EPIRBS on rec vessels
Are generally not the self activating type. A water activated unit is in the ballpark of $700-800 a standard epirb $290-360. Most live in a cradle, and if the boat sinks, she goes down with the ship. A survey system is water activated and may have a hydrostatic release mechanism to separate it from a sinking vessel like a life raft.
Take note of the type of equipment you have, how to use it and where it is. Maybe a grab bag on deck or a drum in a rack on the t-top is a better option than having the epirb in a cradle fixed to the boat.

Poor old buggers would have come out of the water looking like wrinkly old prunes.
On a serious note glad they are ok, must have been something pretty bad happen for the boat to sink that quick.
I though most boats had positive flotation.

Yer I had rescue and the chopper come right past the stern of my boat today with the pilot waiting for our thumbs up. Could have thrown a tennis ball in the window he was that close! Lucky that everyone was ok in the end, besides for the boat.

EPIRB
It would be interesting to know whether they actually had an epirb on board or not. I.m amazed that that all 3 could don life jackets but not one grab the epirb.
When it comes to logging on I'd like to say to all those that think they're "too cool for school" and don't need to log on, don't be a clown. I was once like this until I ran out of fuel and Fremantle Sea Rescue came to my aid as a non member FOR FREE!! Here's a quote from their website searescue.com.au that should give everyone some confidence about jumping on channel 73

This brilliantly volunteer service is 24/7, I personally have logged on as early as 4am, the respondent has never failed to communicate and has never felt inconvienced. I think that's the key, never feel as though you are inconveniencing anyone. What you need to remember that a lot of these brilliant volunteers are people whom potentially gave a void and want a bit if spice in their life or are the selfless type that just thrive on giving.
Member or not, tune to VHF on 73 and log on and log off, wherever you are. It can only give you and your families further piece of mind when you're out there.
I'm extremely glad Dad's army is safe, as would be their wives, their kids, their grand kids and their great grand kids.

Friends of my family
They are experienced fisherman who have been fishing since well before I was born. They regularly target snapper behind Garden Island at night. Have not yet spoken with them but will pass on any info I get.
