Hey All.
This has just been in my mind for a while now. and i am not smart enough to figure it out.
I currently have a Daiwa SL50SHK..
it hold 600m : 0.43mm
550m : 0.47mm
--------------------------------------------
now what i want to know is if i filled it up with 500m of 30lb braid 0.28mm how much top shot mono could i get at 0.45mm?
confusing for me but maybe someone else knows???

Your looking alteast 150 to
Edit*
------------------------------------------------------------------
By finding a base number (600x0.43 in this case) which is 258.
We can change the formula to find the max line capacity of a different diameter line.
which will be (258 divided by 0.28) giving you 921 meters of 30lb braid.
If we have 500 meters of 0.28 it gives us a new base number (remember the old one was 258) so you can now calculate how much of 0.45 will fit on the remaining spool.
which will be 118 divided by 0.45= 260 meters
-------------------------------------------------------------------
You will be able to get 250+ meters before you over spool the reel. However there is no point on having any braid if you decide to have 200 meters + of topshot, might aswell go the full spool of mono.

More like 300m+
The reason for this that due to the composition of braid it tends to lie flat on the spool under tension rather than retain a diameter like mono and this means less voids and more line.

Not much with maths mate but
Not much with maths mate but i reckon its a great idea. I did the same with my reel putting braid backing then roughly a couple of hundred metres of mono top shot. the guys at the fishing shop were telling me its pointless and trying to talk me out of it, but stick with it. have had a few rays smash through 200+ metres very quickly mate and i have been stoked knowing i stil have a heap of backing left
