Reel Maintenance

Most off the time with my gear I simply wash the salt off after a trip with a nice soft water spray from a hose. Every 3rd or 4th trip a bit a CRC to all the moving parts.

Now I have a Stella 8000SW, and I dont want to baby it (I never do) but obviously it needs a bit more TLC than I am used to. All previous reels have been hardworking like Saragosas and Spheros, among some Penns and I hate to say some Okumas, which I thought years ago was good because of the warrantee.

Some advice needed on Stella Care?

I just learnt myself the other day that you should not use CRC or RP7 or any sort of rust protection spray on the reels... That sort of spray is designed to clean out and remove all the oil/grease/gunk!! which means your removing lube for you running gear in the real.

I think the spray to use is called lanox??? which will clean and also lubricate the reel at the same time along with a couple of drops of oil.

Still a bit of a novice at this reel maintenance game but im sure someone on here will be able to verify this????

 Neels, I generally use

Neels, I generally use Saltiga's and I always tighten the drags and wash them with a soapy sponge then rinse with the hose. Once dried, I loosen the drag and forget about them. May not be the text book way of doing it but all my reels perform seamlessly and show no signs of corrosion.

I used to rinse under a slow

I used to rinse under a slow tap and sponge but had one serviced by Shimano recently and they said just a mist from a squirter bottle and a chux is best as even fresh water harms bearings eventually. An occasional spray with Inox or Tackle Guard as well and all will be sweet.

maintenance

hi mate, i usually hose my rods and reels (gently) and occasionally take them in the shower for a wash (soapy water) i usually take the spools off the stellas  and let them dry out and quite often spray all the moving parts and my rod  guides with  inox ,  which i have found to be the best thing for keeping my gear shiny and corrosion free, seriously though as long as you wash off the salt after each trip your stella will be fine.  cheers (you finally know what a "top" quality reel is like , and once youve used one it will be hard going back to gosas!!!LOL!!

Dont use CRC !!!

Light spray of water and Silicon spray is fine, plus a drop of cals grease or shimano oil on the gears via the inspection port every 6 months.

A couple of interesting articles

Wed, 2011-08-03 08:56

I know it goes into a lot more info than Neels probably wanted but this is information I use. My user manuals include general cleaning instructions and I tend to follow those. I have some Shimano reel grease and oil I use. I do tend to lightly hose my reels and then wipe them over with a clean dry cloth. I then put a small amount of sewing machine oil on a kitchen towel (paper) and wipe the reel with that.
