Recreational marina planned for Rous Head Harbour at Fremantle

Recreational marina planned for Rous Head Harbour at Fremantle

The proposed Rous Head Harbour marina at Fremantle is likely to include more than 100 boat pens and will also feature cafes, offices and tourism facilities.

Premier Colin Barnett today announced expressions of interest had been invited from the private sector for development proposals to create a vibrant new mixed-use marina.

“The provision of additional boat pens in this area was an election commitment of this Government to help meet the needs of recreational boat users,” Mr Barnett said.

“Demand for boat pens in the metropolitan area is strong and continues to grow - the Rous Head marina is an outstanding opportunity to create an attractive, well-located development to help meet this need.

“The marina plans are still very much at the conceptual stage, with some preliminary work done by Fremantle Ports and the Department of Transport on the kind of mixed-use facility that could be developed in this location.”

Onshore boat stacking facilities, a ferry terminal and commercial space for charter vessels will be considered in the development.

“Ensuring the proposed marina is compatible with Fremantle’s working port is essential and will be a key consideration in assessing proposals,” the Premier said.

Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said prospective developers would be encouraged to prepare their own innovative designs to balance the interests of Fremantle Ports, the State and the community.

Public access to North Mole and Rous Head Harbour would also be improved by a new road around land newly reclaimed as part of the Inner Harbour deepening.

Mr O’Brien said planning, cultural heritage and environmental approvals would be obtained for the marina project.

“Given the number of issues to be taken into account, community consultation will be important in progressing to the more detailed planning stage,” he said.

A call for Expressions of Interest will close on February 11, 2011.

Short-listed proponents will then detail their proposals for the development and operation of the marina and related facilities on a long-term lease basis.

thing is it sounds great  , but how many ramps are going in and how much are they going to charge for the days parking, my guess too much. hope there will be security down there for those that head over to rotto for an overnighter and leave their car and trailer at the ramp

No ramps, only mentions Pens

No ramps, only mentions Pens & stacking. pointless building another ramp that close to existing ones, but the pens are needed. Maybe the stacking bussiness could do a day rate then your car would be securely parked for overnighter.

That close to which existing

That close to which existing ones? On the ocean, you have the two closest public ramps (Hillaries/Woodman point) at least 20min+ away. You're other options are either East Perth, which takes 20min to get to the ocean thanks to the 8kn limit, or hope you get into a private yacht club and pay heaps a year and launch at south freo. Would be nice to have a public ramp inbetween hillaries and woodies that isnt ages up river, but I guess thats not a concern when you can make more money off rich yachts/pens/stacks..

Mate there's a large public

Fri, 2010-11-12 12:20

Mate there's a large public ramp at East Freo between the left bank & the swan yatch club not to far up the river at all. Only 4km from the ramp to the heads.

Sorry, I wrote East Perth,

Sorry, I wrote East Perth, when I meant East Freo. Its not far up the river in terms of distance, but because of the 8knot speed limit its 20min up river. I was wanting to fish some ground near the south mole once and I figured it would take about 5 minutes more to drive the boat from woodies than to go via east freo (and it'd save me $12 :p).

Could be a private ramp, or

Could be a private ramp, or service ramp? If the boat stackers are there they might have their own private ramp?

I reckon they need a ramp some where between Swanbourne & Trig there is plenty of crown land sitting idle.

What I'm worried about

Sat, 2010-11-13 08:12

is the traffic flow, I assume a lot of you have seen the trucks semi's in and out of Patricks, P & O, running empties as well and going to quaratine, then Kewdale etc, and then add the the freight train line.  Its a mad house down there during the week, trucks parked on the road waiting to get into container yards or the wharf.  Week ends not to bad but then you have sight seers, trucks running empties in/out and the surf club, beaches just a bit further north.  The planners will have to really think of the traffic flow and look to the future traffic flow with busines and resturants Barney is staying that will be there also.'

HLOKK....Cockburn power boats has membership avilaible at the moment no  waiting list, secure parking, wash down bays, etc

roberta what are they

Sat, 2010-11-13 08:20

roberta

what are they charging now per year?

woodies is the ramp i mostly use when going to rotto, do they offer overnight parking, i know the shop does, but it is a pain in the butt to park there.

hlokk...

if they put a ramp at the heads, imagine what they will charge????? east freo is a blatent rip off and it is a shithouse ramp to begin with,

again...... boycott east freo ramp and they will start to realize.

I think they want people to

Sat, 2010-11-13 15:07

I think they want people to boycott it and thats why they charge such high rates.

"Hey, look, no-ones using the ramp, so now you can approve our plan to demolish it and builld some apartments"

Even if freo was $12 at least it would be a lot closer to rotto and some fishing areas inbetween, so could be worth it sometimes. With East Freo, you dont really get the advantages thanks to the slow trip down river.

Roberta: CPBA is obviously the same dist at woodies, so not really many advantages for me (well, minus windows perhaps).

Think you can get the forms on line, then when you fill them out, the bar is open Saturday 2.00pm till 5.00pm Sunday 2.00pm till 7.00pm and the office is open Saturday morning 9.00am till 1.00pm if working and if you can get down there during the week. Tuesday through till Thursday, 8.30am till 4.00pm I think.   There should be full members around Sat/Sunday for two signatures I think for the nomination form our web page is www.cockburnpowerboats.com.au (newsletter is on there also left hand side of page)  or phone 9418 5868.  When you become a full member their is a bosun/caretaker that looks after the yard after hours.  A special area is for parking  designated only for overnighters, then the bosun knows, wash down area, club facilities, bbq area, showers/tiolets.  Club  has bar (club rates for drinks) & can even hire the clubs rooms for private functions, but not 18th birthday parties (wonder why) good luck if you join
