Recommendations for getting my 4x4 serviced
Submitted by Trousersnake on Tue, 2010-02-23 12:02
Yo dudes,
I heard that I shouldn't take my jackaroo to a holden dealer. There is a holden dealer up here in Clarkson. There is nothing wrong with tha truck I just want to take it in for a service. What are yer suggestions / opinions.
Thanks

My Parents
Had a 3ltr Turbo Diesel Jackaroo. After holden stuffed up the services about 67 times and then a string of maintenance issues that finally resulted in a cracked head, they sold the piece of shit and bought a nissan Patrol.
Mistakes made: replacing engine oil with incorrect oil 4 services in a row, resulting in blowouts in service time and a flush/refill each time, not replacing or incorrect installation of gaskets leading to massive oil leaks, recalls via holden, problems not identified with the fuel pump leading to diesel comming through to the cab through aircon - I shit you not!
Go to Robson Brothers 4WD repairs in Welshpool, pricey but good. Up your way, I just had the engine in my toyota rebuilt by TJ Motor Importers in Wangara very happy with Van's work. Dunno if he does regular servicing, but worth a call.

Deefa
Dan (Deefa) from the site. He owns/operates Autobahn in Innaloo - 9446 7588
Good prices, he is ugly, but more importantly the job is done properly.
Need my Pootrol serviced soon too.
Cheers Pete

Mines a 3lt turbo diesel
I am a bit hesitant to take it in with nothing wrong with it. My history with taking rides in for a service usualy means I have more problems after. I have never owned a diesel or a 4x4 before so I jus want to look after it.

Service
What service does it need?If its just an oil/filter change then do it yourself.
Takes about half an hour to drop the oil, replace filter and give it a squirt of grease.$40 for oil,$20 for new oil filter, same for new air cleaner element and an initial cost of $30 for a grease gun.The booklet that comes with the vehicle will give you all the necessary info on what grade oil, filter etc plus how to carry it out.

yeah get a manual and do it
yourself
some mechanics nowadays are useless and just want money
all it should need for now is
clean airfilter
oil change
oil filter change
and just make sure the coolant is full and in condition along with the power steering and brake fluid.

I had a look under tha hood
I had a look under tha hood today. I'm confident with oil change and filter change. Filter looks easy to access I have already bought 5 litres of oil I'm hoping that I bought tha right type it specified on tha back of it for turbo diesel engines. It is also for engines with 100k or more. I might need to buy one of those oil filter tools to loosen it off. I 'm gona need tha tire iron tho cause I can't find one in tha truck. Tha jack is there but then again I could get under tha 4x4 today without jackin it up. I usualy do things myslf jus a bit hsitant with a diesel engine.

When buying an oil filter removal tool
Go for a strap model, all the others are shit! If you have serious problems, belt a screwdriver through and twist it out.

Fuel filter
If you are going to do the fuel filter,if it is an upright one,is to fill the new filter with fuel before you spin it on.To bleed it there should be a bleed valve on the main filter body, open it up about 2-3 turns and underneath the fuel lift pump you will find a small lever.Pump the lever untill there are no bubbles coming through then close it off. With most of the newer diesels they usually don't require the injectors being bled.
Filling the filter first saves a heap of pumping on the lift pump lever.Don't forget to lubricate the rubber washer on the fuel and oil filters and don't over tighten as they will give you trouble next time round.

Take it to Clarkson
Take it to Clarkson Holden. Not only are they a customer of mine but they obviously know Holden's. Your just kidding yourself with the cheaper mobs, they have no idea about recalls, fixes, campaigns etc for your car and don't have the same access to bullitens and tech tools that Holden Dealers have. You would not take your expensive fishing reel to kmart tackel for service so why take your car to someone cheap?

yeah if you checked your
manual you should have the right grade oil and oil filter, just do a overall check like i said before
and check the airfilters clean
a well running vehicle shoulndnt need anything else
tonyb, just because the dealers look all nice and clean, doesnt mean they are better
and i'am pretty sure the cheaper guys will have tools because otherwise they wouldnt make much money, you cant use a hammer to check valve clearances or to change the oil.
once you start servicing youre car yourself its unlikely youll stop
you save a heap servicing your own cars
and most mechanics just want money, most cars dont need servicing as often as they do nowadays
the best thing about doing the work yourself, is knowing exactly what you have done
