Recfishwest Calls on Government to Protect Your Fishing Fund!
The future of the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund (RFIF) is under threat following the release of the State Budget.
Prior to the last election the Government promised to allocate 25% of your fishing licence fees into the RFIF.
Recfishwest is concerned the RFIF is to be cut by almost 50% and have bought this to the Government’s attention.
The RFIF is widely acclaimed for supporting better fishing through enhancement, development and conservation projects.
This cut will immediately result in: • No artificial reef for Mandurah, • No more prawns stocked into the Swan River, • A decrease in fishing safety outcomes, • No state-wide deployment of Fish Aggregation Devices, • No more stocking of Mulloway or Pink Snapper, • No Restoration of estuary habitats in Albany, • No fish friendly farms program for WA, • No leadership development for young recreational fishers,
Any raid on your fund will also impact a range of future programs delivering benefits to the recreational fishing community.
The RFIF is the people’s fund.
We are calling on the people's representatives in parliament to make this right.
We are pleased to see support from WA Labor and Shooters and Fishers Party for this election commitment and for recognising the value of the RFIF.
Recfishwest is now calling on the Government to honour their commitment and protect your fishing fund!
Stay tuned we will keep you up-to-date on this highly important development.
Yes angry too, Absolute despicable money grabbing by the government. Maybe if they didn't get those ridiculous pensions for the rest of their life after 4 years in office , the country would have a few bucks spare.
Now the marine parks bullshit is on the table again. I don't think I can handle any more facepalming, my face is flat as cardboard these days.
You pay peanuts, you get Monkeys.
I'm all for giving NEW parliamentary senior positions a huge payrise. Make it a job worth doing and maybe we might start to get Polly's with half a brain, and some actual fiscal responsibility.
I don't know a single successful economist that would be a politician for that kind of money....and that's sad.
Keep cutting back Politicians pay, and you will get more and more morons.
yes I have to agree somewhat-its a job that is on a knife edge all the time, people watching all the time and trying to trip.
And could be out on your ass in a week.
No professional would give up another career to do that unless they are already rich enough or got nothing else worthwhile to do-parliment full of Clive Palmers and Jackie Lambie's
Being a polly is the only job I know of that you don't have to have any qualifications or job skills to do.
Just be popular at the local school gatherings shake a few hands with the oldies at the nursing homes and pat a few new born babies on the head, oh and I nearly forgot be able to look people in the eye and lie like all hell on what you are doing to help them. Then you to can be a polly.
With so many important things in the wind that are going to have big impacts on recreational fishers I think it is really time to start making noises about how good some of the small focused independent parties would look good sitting in the upper house.
In my view there is nothing this government will not stoop to, to try and cover it's arse over what a farce it has presided over with the money that it has had from mining royalties, massive increases in every type of licence it issues. Do I think there are a few fools and incompetents sitting on government benches right now, you bet I do.
Very disgusted in the way my tax dollars have been spent and thinking the tax dollars would go towards the things the government said would be done with those dollars.
Rant over.
I just hope a good portion of the people on here are recfishwest members. Gives us a bigger voice. This has made my blood boil all day, I mean honestly how frigging broke is this state that they have to resort cutting funding to something we are paying extra for anyway.
You say bloody liberals?? Look at what labour wanted to do at the last federal election with the greens. I don't agree with what they are doing if they do proceed but in my opinion they are better than labour.
Well it will be interesting to see if the government minister for fisheries can keep his word. In saying that the original funding will be kept I wounder just what the emperor will say about that.
This Govt is are the masters at shifting funds around and using money from accounts like this one to fund core business elsewhere.
The classic example is the $20m being taken from the Road Trauma Trust Account to fund flashing school zone signs at all metro primary schools. They are supposed to be funding by Main Roads WA and the money would actually save lives if spend like it is supposed to be at Metro intersections and country roads where run off road crashes have occured.

Simple solution implement a fishing licence for all anglers at $15×750000 (number of rec fishers) = more money for govt, more money for rec fishing projects, more money for fisheries officers and all licensed anglers are now provided with rule guides and species id/fish measuring stickers. Completely does away with the 'I didn't know the size/bag/species' excuse.
Means boat anglers are not longer subsidizing facilities, programs and enforcement for shore based anglers.
PS I know we are all pissed off they could cut the Rfif funding to 13% but im pretty sure when the Rbfl was introduced in 2010 100% of the funds were to go back into fishing based initiatives. Ill do some research on this today to see if I can find the original press releases.
Yeah I remember them saying 100%, because I was all for it under those circumstances....but seems like usual it's all good for a while, then bam they'll change there minds on money allocation.
How about they do a backflip and put 100% of our licence fees to the Recreational Fishing Initiative Fund.
I don't think this is in any way being greedy
Why the hell should 75% of our recreational fishing licence fees be going to anything other than helping recreational fishing? That's what we get raped on income tax for!!!
We've seen the good they can do with 25% of our fees, imagine the what they could do with all of it!

Angry
Gotta say this fugging average, if they are raiding it to fund something other than fishing then Recfishwest will certainly get my support.

We're all idiots...
...for believing any promises made prior to an election. Labor, Libs, doesn't matter. They'll say anything to get in, then it's time to bend over.

For some reason I cannot put it in as a link, copy and paste to your browser.
Mr Moore said those who took out a RFBL would be investing in protecting the future quality of recreational fishing.
“Funds from the new licence fee will be spent solely on initiatives relating to recreational fishing,” he said.
