Re survey Genesis Boat???

I have recently been told by my mechainc that my 115 etec has been 'overworked' for want of a better word

my crankshaft ad crankcase have both been basically written off

my problem is my boat is rated by survey to hold a 125hp maximum.

outboards are generally in 115 then jump to a 130.

im not that keen to get another 115 because of whats happened this time (engine did have 1000 hours on it)

i feel i wont be able to have it insured if i have a 125 rated boat and have a 130 on it.

we drive long kms in carnarvon, often doin overnighters and carrying a fair bit of gear fuel people etc...no more then what the weight plate says.

the boat is so wide and tall i always thought a 115 was underpowered

the other option is to get a 115HO which gives the equivalent of a 127hp engine....but i have read elsewhere that if you feel a certain engine size is underpowered for your boat, you shouldnt get the HO option you should get the next size..but its not rated

my question is does anyone know if you can have your boat re-surveyed and maybe get the weight rating increased, or can you get it insured if you have a bigger outboard on then what is recommended

thanks for  your help

Jess

Why not talk to the guys in

Why not talk to the guys in armadale that make the boats I'm sure the best advise would come from them. We had a couple of small things made by them for our boat and they were very good to deal with.

From purely a survey point of view the weight difference of the motor would be more relevant than the difference of an extra 5 horses.
That being said best to check with the builder and see what they say, from an insurance point of view see if you can get something in writing from the builder to give to the insurer and get them to note it an approve it on the policy(on your copy) - maybe prior to buying said motor that way they can't use it as an out in the event of any claim.

motor

that sounds a bit ordinary black gen, going up another 10-15hp wouldnt make too much notable difference.  I think you would have to go to 150 to see it.

maybe get another opinion on why the motor failed, not sure on the lifetime of an etec but would think it would do alot more than 1000hrs

out of interest what sort of top speed were you getting on that boat with that motor and what was your normal cruising speed.  After test driving quite a few different boats around that size this year I found alot of varience in motor/hull combinations.eg just what I can remember

590 new trailcraft beam 2.3m with brand new 4 stroke merc 115hp top speed 26knots with nothing in it demo model, hull weight without motor 680kg

the boat I ended up buying, old Westerberg with modified transom 5.7m 2.3m beam, big canopy 6mm ali hull weight without motor I think is around 850kg powered by 90hp 4 stroke Johnson/suzuki with 500 hours top speed 34 knots with the normal weight of gear on board.  Initially I thought this boat might have been alittle bit underpowered when I looked at it but its not the case and very economical

just comparing those two boats there is no doubt that motor on the trailcraft is going to work/rev alot harder as most people in ali boats cruise around in the 17-22knot range.  My hull will only let me crack out 34 knots on the river (ski zone) the westerberg has a slightly flatter hull than the trailcraft so for me I am never really cruising above 25 knots

I have been on a barcrusher too but I cant remember the exact details, those boats come standard with alot of horsepower.  I havent driven one enough but they are a light boat with a narrow beam (2.2m) posssibly more power than they need but they are premium and to empty out the floodable keel alot of people like looking at big motors lol

something wrong with that

Tue, 2013-11-19 11:22

something wrong with that Trailcraft-my old 5800 with a F115 and 400hrs would do 29 knots with EVERYTHING for a 3 day Abrolhos trip-3 blokes and dive gear, 250 litres fuel, big esky-estimated 800-900kg of load.
And 34 knots lightship.
Still a 150 would have been preferable though not for top speed but load carrying.
It was rated to 200hp though-scary!

trailcraft

I must admit I was a bit surprised with the trailcraft package.  I reckon the older trailcrafts are probably a better hull, my mate has  an old mid to late 80's that rides pretty well and Uncle of here has one about the same as that and it goes alright too

That's alot of RPM to cruise at, by the sounds you need minimum 130hp.

rpm

Tue, 2013-11-19 14:01

I would have thought it is a little bit high but most boats with out boards around that range would be doing over 4000rpm at that speed.  I am not a mechanic but there are  afew on here that can probably offer some adive on that

Was more alluding to the fact that cruising at 4800PRM is past the point of efficiency and is working pretty hard if your cruising for a couple of hours.

Ive got a 130hp on a 620 quinny and usually cruise at 3500-4000RPM which is around 18kn, if its short trip that goes out the window but.

I'd be tempted to go smaller on prop size so that its not working as hard and stay with the 115hp

I have a Genesis 550XL Centre Console around 2006 with a 115 Evinrude ETEC on the back.It is stamped MAX 130HP so maybe they have been uprated, would check with the builders and they maybe able to give some help.
