mate unless u'v got the right gear(heavy duty) and are planning to use one as a swim bait i would not bother using rays as bait .
U want big oily baits, tuna heads, body, makeral, mullet ect any thing that has alot of oil in it will attract sharks.(keep them whole if u can and just open up the gill plate)
Yeh going to buy some frozen tuna heads n mullet in Esperance. Just want to experiment as I saw they used ray on that Texas shark fishing site. Plus the mullet or tuna heads aren't very big.
Ive got some heavy gear that I want to test so should be fun anyway
that sounds like a rig for a white. probably not a good idea. up north you may hook a tiger but south your asking for trouble. stick to salmon baits down there off the beach:)
Got a penn senator special 114h2, 15-24kg 8ft rod, 50lb braid, 130lb leader, wire trace think 200lb, 8or9/0 hooks. Ballooning if the wind is right, need to buy a kayak!
Need to catch a salmon this weekend. I have no idea what to target, caught a 5ft bronzie from Hopetoun jetty on a herring a few weeks ago. It's abit shallow here though.
Catch a salmon and swim it , if there are bronzies about they will smash it ..... use one of those 4-5kg jobs they will swim for ages if rigged correctly. Just be ready as a 80kg plus bronzie will have a great first run , if u get one of the 100 mark it could easly take of a few hundred meters. hopefully u will have enough string on your reel and a smooth drag or it be all over in seconds.
if you use a kayak in those waters, you could be a gw dinner, best bait would be salmon or mullet, tailor etc on a strong wire trace,i wouldnt be game paddling out in those waters down south, they dont call it shark alley for nothing
you would have to be a bit of a big girls blouse not to, the chances of you falling off the kayak and getting bitten before you get back on are so ar out its not funny, just dont think about it. i use a surfboard when i got nothing else.
i take it youve never had a close call with a sizey shark dreamtime. i would pay money to see you paddle a salmon out 300 at night on your board in esperance. i surf and fish the area often and know what lives there. very high chances of being hit, whether you want to think about it or not. and as far as the kayak being safe, a big white will happilly go the kayak.
