Raymarine Axiom
Owners or Axiom units and prospective purchasers be advised that Raymarine has produced a series of videos on how to use thier units for the best results. Several owners have posted thier dissapointment in using these units. The auto settings do not produce the best results and owners need to customise diplays for best results. I have used my 12 inch unit for the past 9 months and after many hours of use and adjustment have it dialed in for excellent results . There is a learning curve and owners need to put in hours of use to get best results. No manufacturers units work perfectly out of the box in auto mode without proper hands on tuning. The new tips and tricks videos from Raymarine will help new users if they can be bothered to make an effort to learn how thier units work best. I find with any unit they need to be adjusted differently for daily conditions especially depth. One frustrated owner posted that he was not happy that fish were displayed as icons in the 3d mode rather than as in standard mode. Had they been bothered to read the specifications and instruction manual they would have known this prior to purchase. The mighty Furuno dff3d equivelent does the same but at double the price. It also has to be adjusted for best display. No i do not work for raymarine neither do i get a kick back from them for this post. It just frustrates me when people bag a unit when they cant be bothered to make an effort on how to learn new technology. The videos can be found at www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcDVq5a_62M or on the Raymarine website. I hope Axiom owners can enhance thier units performance for best results. This can be achieved IF owners make the effort.

Yeah saw that in my emails this morning, pretty good video. Your link didn’t work, so here’s another.

I’d be keen to see some real
I’d be keen to see some real life screen shots of the 3D image in depths we use commonly in the metro area (40m - 50m). Considering upgrading to this or similar soon.

Thanks Dale for your input re web address. Every individual boat hull and its transducer location will influence the image shown on a screen. Every day with different water conditions including surface wave action, water temp, water depth clarity of water etc will influence the image shown on the screen. I dont have the tech savy to post screen shots but there are plenty on the net. Go to panbo a us site for in depth testing ,operator reports and screen shots. The reports filed here give plenty of examples. Contact raymarine asia which is based in the eastern states and they can give you souces to inspect. The raymarine videos show you how to make every single adjustment to enhance immage quality. Re tune the gain screen advance etc for every new depth. Dont forget the cardinal rule for all sounders keep increasing gain untill interfence starts to show then tweek back gain slowly to remove the clutter. Nothing can replace dedicating time to get best results. Dont expect perfect results on shit days. Above all else ensure you have properly grounded your head unit. Register your unit with raymarine so you get info on using your unit and further software upgrades which will be posted.

I've only had a chance to
I've only had a chance to play with the 3D and sidescan a little bit and am trying to work it out. I have found that the way it renders the bottom in 3D is not highly detailed but I'm still getting to know it. You can drive a search pattern over the bottom and it builds up a bigger 3Dish picture but not great detail. No screen shots but I'll grab some next trip out if I get time.
The side scan detail is MUCH better and in good conditions it's quiet useful, especially alongside the other sounder screens.
Here's a screenshot of sidescan in shallow water inside the 3 mile off Ocean Reef clearly showing the lumps and sandy bottom just passed.

Get what you paid for
Would like to be shown if theRaymarine 3D will be able to pick up 1m high lumps of plate coral on sand. Wouldn’t be surprised if the furuno didn’t do it either. Finding fish is next to useless for me as I dive for Crays and as the common saying goes find the ground the fish will come.

had an Axiom for a few months now
generally happy with the unit, but typically a lazy user,
havent got around to setting up the side scan and other functions
good motivation to set the system up better
only problem i have is that I went for the 9inch and now i want a second unit
so i can use one for GPS and the other to find fish

The unit can pick up 1 meter lumps. Make sure you have the unit reading in feet not meters as you can get more fine detail up on the screen, an old fishermans trick. Remember when in search mode do not have sidescan set at maximum range. The wider the range the less bottom detail. Sidescan setting will be more effective than 3d in this situation.
