predictions for metro pelagics this season

just wondering what everyones predictions are for pelagics in metro waters this season.

i am chasing my first YFT and spaniard from perth waters.

noticed while on the boat last trip out , the temp was registering at nearly 23 degrees out in the 30's. hopefully a good sign.

just need to sort out a good spread of lures as will be running 3 rods , and get a couple of teasers to up the chances.  can't wait.

plan so far is to troll the south/west side of rotto early morning around the drop offs , keeping an eye on bait balls and birds .

sound about right??

Warm water

I have noticed water temp is alright i think it will be a pretty good season for pelagics. On the downside high water temp means low numbers of metro salmon around april.

2 weeks ago i nailed as many

Sun, 2010-01-03 15:37

2 weeks ago i nailed as many long tail tuna as humanly possible. there were thousands balling up bait. heaps of birds diving and the tuna were right out of the water.got them 40km out off mindarie. could of fished all day.  i always have spare rod with a 70grm twisty just in case. ive had a boat for four years now and ive never seen a serious bait ball in perth but 2 weeks ago you could of cast a fork and hook up.

Sun, 2010-01-03 16:36

im new to the trolling in metro waters for the pelaegics, so this season il def give it a go. Walker i saw your pics, great stuff mate. I saw the same thing on xmas day north side of rotto. Heaps of tuna, was hard trying to get to the school and cast my lure and drive the boat at the same time. Didnt get any but they were def tuna surfacing. Such a good site to see when perth has decent fish going wild :)

G'day Grayzee I see you're

G'day Grayzee

I see you're in Mullaloo. Best bet for macks is just outside of Mindarie marina off the back off the 3 Mile. Always have had success through that area when they're around. Also try around the Gemini Wreck for tuna. Landed a couple of decent 15-20kg yft. You cant really beat out wide for tuna just look for birds and bait. And dont be afraid to mix your lures up a bit.

Cheers Mick

cheers mick did you troll up

Sun, 2010-01-03 20:03

cheers mick

did you troll up the YFT's at gemini or cube em at anchor?

def keen for some of that action either way.

i'd imagine a 20kg YFT would put up a bit of a struggle.

would the YFT would go good as sashimi??

People anchor up current

Sun, 2010-01-03 20:19

People anchor up current from the gemini wreck and cube them off. If you're too close to the wreck they just hang you up on it.

I dived it a few weeks back and its covered in bits of line and lead.

Trolled up the tuna due to

Sun, 2010-01-03 20:46

Trolled up the tuna due to the sambos. Small skirted lures work well. Got them also on drift baits for the sambos. The tuna are a lot more active and are constantly on the move around the wreck whereas the sambos sit right on it.

Hey Till you didn't happen to find a weeded up sarca anchor out there. Lost one about 4 years ago when a sambo took off on a braid outfit and cut through 12mm anchor rope in seconds.

A sarca would be long gone.

Mon, 2010-01-04 06:09

A sarca would be long gone.

I did have a few sniggers at the anchor copes that went *through* the structure, you just know that they were attached to anchors that people just didn't get back.

Metro!

Mon, 2010-01-04 09:38

Every year the macs & tuna are active at certain times. Obviously the warmer waters & more bait the better. I went to Rotto recently for a looky-see and got a small YFT & YTK on lure but no macs, a bit early in "general" but not long now!

I use a small Dillfish mirror teaser, troll 2 minnow lures with a mid & deepdiver combo!

Halco Laser pro 190DD & Rapala X-Rap 30 & Rapala CD18 my fav, prefered colours are gold/red-head/blue/greens!

Rotto & outer reefs the go, keep an eye on the sea surface water temp (CSIRO) also!

Looking forward to another metro pelagic season =)
