Port Hedland in Winter Months

Hey guys,

have been fishing up here in Hedland for the last 5 months or so (not just fishing, working as well :)) and it's been great. Yesterday arvo I was the only one at the boat ramp and didn't see any other boats out either. Was a bad sign already! Spent about 4hours copping waves trying to get onto some fish but only managed a mini shark. Hope this is not how all winter is gonna be like!

I'm going on a 5 week break back to Belgium and will be back in Port from July until November. What sort of fish can I expect those months? Are the spaniards and tuna around that time of year? Big fan of pelagics and not really a bottom bouncer..

Cheers,

Jelle

Cheers Neels.

Shouldn't be too different from Karratha I suppose.. Any idea about the weather? Is it worse during the colder months? I'm quite limited with my 4.5m runabout..

if it's a 15knot or more easterly, stay home!

it's not worth the discomfort and the seas just gets mashed up and shuts down, use the rule if it's crap weather in Perth it's good for fishing up here. Mackerel will make themselves known in the cooler months and into Spring for sure. Marlin and Sails i dunno, Dodgy may be able to offer advice there.

Overall winter has more bad days than summer, but you also can have some awesome days weather wise. As Brucesta said if it sux in Perth its great here. If there is a big high in the GAbight, then the Easterlies kill you up here. At least here we have a lea for most winds, but easterlies sux.

Look up Willy weather and check the data on there for your location.

Hi Jelle, as mentioned by

Hi Jelle, as mentioned by Neels and Brucesta the spaniards do come in closer during the cooler months, but from my experience they are a little too for out to get out of a 4.5m boat (around easter time the spaniards come right in), if you are just after some fun and not a feed then you cant go past jigging the channel markers with soft plastics for trevally and queenfish with the odd cobia thrown in, blue swimmer crabs are about this time of the year also, the creeks can also be fished for bream, bluenosed salmon, flathead and the like, don't forget the spoil bank for the salmon too, might have to head down there myself tomorrow after work with a flick rod and some lures. if you want anymore info send me a pm and i will help you out where i can.

Cheers Yewie

Yeah, haven't been past the 24 marker yet. When it's calm I wouldn't mind going out further.

I managed to get some good spaniards 2-3months ago and they were all caught trolling near the boat mooring area next to the spoil bank, so I reckon every once and a while they should be in reach. I usually just go for fun, I'll take the odd tuna or spanish for the table but 95% off the fish 'll go back. Somehow the creeks don't really appeal to me too much at the moment. The excitement of dropping a lure in a school of feeding pelagics is just to good!

Thanks for the replies guys, helpful stuff!

I reckon if its blowing a gale and you just want to fish, go off the beach or the spoil bank and get amongst the threadies when they start running.
