Point peron! please look.

Me and my mate want to start wetting our line around point peron, Rockingham.

What fish can we actually catch there, and what part of point peron should we try for that fish?

I heard theres a few waves there, so are tailor a option??

Also let us know what rigs/reels/lures you usually use, that would be great.

If you dont want to let anyone else know just pm me id appreciate that alot :)

when i was 10 and younger it was a GREAT place to fish for most species but ive noticed that it has got worse an worse over the years:(

we use to get tailor, whiting ( king george and big sand whiting), herring, flounder, flathead, bream and most bread and butter species.

the spot that i fished is the weed beds out to the lef as you drive in. good luck.

Like Danno mentioned, USED to

Like Danno mentioned, USED to be a great place to fish.

Any resident species were wiped out long ago by newby spearo's who'd target anything that moved, or new australians that had no idea what it really was they were spearing. Only a month back I witnessed an oriental gentleman walking out all wetsuited up and loaded down with big buff bream...and a catch bag full of butterfish. Anything that moves....

Off the back beach (easily found, walk right of the main carpark) some older gents fish the mornings for semi-regular bags of herring and garfish, floating berley cage and long leader laced with maggots or small pieces of prawn.

Around the whitewater area's its sometimes possible to find big tailor and salmon in season, most use mulies under a float to save snagging the reefy bottom but lures let you work much more water.

The shallow beach facing Garden Island can hold some great whiting and odd flathead at times.

Other than that you might get an occasional tarwhine, king george or skippy but they are pretty rare nowadays.

If you enjoy some catch n release there is still some big buffy's to be found, they go hard and are top fun on the light gear when nothing else is biting.

Few squid around the calmer weedbed area's too.

If your driving there expect your car to be broken into as well, better off leaving the windows down to avoid the broken glass thru your car!

Sorry for the doomsday reply, hopefully one day it returns to its former glory but I'm not holding my breath.

but as for there is no fish down there now that is bull!! there are plenty of herring skippy whiting king george at the right time of year and salmon in season! i have also seen a good size snapper caught there recently! but you have to choose your times to fish early morning or dusk is the best time! and the buffies are great fun on light gear!

Having been a regular visitor

Having been a regular visitor to pt peron, i'd agree that its pretty barron most of the time. And i'd agree that new aussies tend to spear anything that moves. Musta had a ball with those buffy's....geez new low there. Berley is the key there, and you will attract hezzas, gardies and skippy. But tailor....few and far between. Salmon...no chance this year. Forget about the beach....get on the rocks at the back. Beach is generally avg. Good for shelter in a howling southerly IMO.

That snapper might be yours snappermiles is talking about hey manna? although bit further away from actual 'pt peron'. haha

Fair enough snappermiles,

Fair enough snappermiles, I'll agree to disagree.

Been fishing it for 30 yrs tho and pulled a lot of fish from there back in the day, mostly catch n release coz I can't be arsed cleaning them, but I still think its not even a patch on what it used to be. But if you reckon its a good spot then more power to you. Lots more productive places within 10 mins of there for mine but after all thats just an opinion isn't it, not a fact.

Might have been Spence, might have been mate. But I'm not out to prove anything on here hey, just offering some wanted advice...  ;)

It looks like such a promising spot....

Tue, 2011-04-12 09:08

Tried Pt. Peron a few times as it looked like such a promising spot for S.O.R. fishing. The bay on the left as you drive in has produced bulk herring for me every time I go down there, but is no good if it's a southerly.

Supposedly there have been some reasonable fish taken off of the North Tip, but the cliffs are not a friendly place to fish.

Did one all nighter there, not a relaxing experience as the Rocko knuckle-draggers are still screaming up and down the roads and doing burnouts in the carparks all night. Spend more time checking on your car than minding your rods.

R.E. the spearfishing, I thought that was illegal at Pt. Peron? Would love to have seen the Buff bream spearo's face when he got to taste his catch :D

That northern tip between

Tue, 2011-04-12 09:24

That northern tip between G.I. and Peron was once known as Shark Alley, then they built the causeway...lots of noahs on balloons there back in the day.

Just to the right of the tip was good for snapper too, and the little natural bridge there was a dead set cert for big greenbacks, casting into the whitewater on the left.

Go for a dive but and pretty much all you see is little KG's, wrasse and buffys nowadays.

I reckon you should have a crack anyway dansyy and just see what you find, can't do no harm can it and then you can make up your own mind. If not you'll always be wondering...

i agree with you manna

i agree with you manna blue....i've fished that area for over 40 years....before the causeway the salmon schools were seen off the beach at palm beach! Used to make pocket money with occy traps and regularly got a feed of flounder and crabs at the start of the weed bank just off shore............certainly changed now though....   :(

I've only fished it twice,

Tue, 2011-04-12 09:34

I've only fished it twice, but when we did go there were still a few herring, gardies and squid kicking around. Might be harder to get bigger fish (we did get one tailor hit) but at least there were some smaller things to have fun with. We berleyed up in one of the rocky bays in the arvo (luckily no probs with car).
