Platypus mono: Platinum vs Low stretch
Submitted by cuthbad on Wed, 2010-09-15 17:55
Anyone used both the platinum and the low stretch?
I have always used the platinum and rate it highly for a mid range mono with a fairly thin diamater. Im using the 50lb and thinking of making the switch to low stretch. the only thing stopping me is that its a little thicker. Platinum is .55 and i think low stretch is .6. Not a big difference but im wondering if it will be any harder to cast because of this.
Also is there any difference in knot strenth, abrasion resistance or anything else that anyone has noticed?
thanks

I found platinum was very thin for a mono, though imo low stretch is better. I don't particularly like how mono degrades though

i currently use 30lb Lo Stretch on my tailor combo and i find that it casts well. one thing however, i find it does have quite a bit of memory still.... have to respool every 2 months or so, because of the stretch and degrading quality of it.

I will say Lo stretch has
I will say Lo stretch has shocking abrasion resistance , but it hasn't let me down. I have it on all my 30lb mono setups. Good for using lures too because you can feel the connected to the lure a bit better.

low stretch
low stretch all the way for me, I use it on all my beach combo's though i tend to fish high wave action beaches.
I found the platinum to be quite stiff and once it gets a twist it kinks a little although overall not bad line but for me i go the low stretch everytime. I think its the best of both worlds for the beach and it hasnt failed me yet. like any line it doesnt hurt to lose 10m every now and then and its pretty cheap.
That much different in diameter wont make much distance difference as compared to sinker/rod/reel and casting technique
by the way i have landed heaps of big stingrays, tailor and clumps of weed on 15kg lowstretch what are you fishing for with 50lb because that size line will cut your casting distance

lowy
actually just got back from the tackle shop to get my tld25 respooled with low stretch... i love it, mainly because i feel it is a cross between mono and braid to an extent. it all comes down to what u like and wat feels comfy for u, but everyone on this topic has gone low stretch so thats gotta be sayin somethin.

I use both
I've got 8lb Platinum on one of my spools and have been really happy with the quality of the line - very thin and responsive.
Have 15kg and 24kg Lo Stretch for the heavier beach applications and it has been good to me. No complaints however recently respooled with 20lb Suffix Elite (? I think) and have been really impressed by the quality of the line.

I prefer platinum. I gave lo stretch a run years ago, but didn't like it at all.
It feels very similar to a IGFA pre test line (generally thicker with more memory).
