Pilchards supply problem?
Submitted by buzzkill on Thu, 2011-12-29 19:23
Hi all, a queenslander here. We have been having problems getting pillies over here for a few months now and I am wondering what the problem might be? Has that virus gone through them again? too many to going to the for people sardine market? or just the bait gods are angry with me? again. If you can shine any light on the subject much appreciated.

I know a couple of mulie fisherman
and was down in Albany only a couple of weeks back. They reckon the market has exploded and they cant keep up with demand even though they catch their quotas no problem.

There actually has been a bit
There actually has been a bit of a shortage over the last month. The big two bait companies have struggled to get many blocks, we sold out over the Christmas period.

not sure what that comment means
"says heaps about WA fisheries really" but if a fisherman gets more for selling larger pillies for human consumption then thats what he'll do Id think? Unless someone is going to subsidise them?
Bummer but thats the way it is

last year major fishing
last year major fishing stores were out of pillies during Xmas period. One should think that they'll carry a bit of extra stock consider the Xmas season. Size is really small. Couldn't put them to a gang and ended up tying them to 2/0 hooks. :-(

Seems it might be a supply
Seems it might be a supply and demand thing. This has been an off and on problem for several months not just the christmas period. Any quality goes really quick so I grab it while I can otherwise I end up hunting round only to finding poor quality pilchards. Thanks for the feedback all
