PGFC FADs prep 20 Nov 2010

Despite the fantastic boating weather, there was a good turnout for the PGFC FADs working bee. Endless piles of anchors, rope, chain and shackles. Hopefully all they all made it back together in the right fashion. While we were building the PGFC ones, the Jurien ones were also built, and White from Seasports took them with him.

Pic 1 shows workers of all sizes at it.

Pic 2 shows Otto, Whitey and myself unspooling some fresh line.

Pic 3 shows the Perth FADs built and ready for depolyment.

Ive never been out to the FADS, being apart of it and then catching fish off them would be a good feeling. Is it voluntary or you have to be a part of a club? Would like to join next year if it is:)

The FADs program is run by the PGFC, with assistance from various sponsors. I'm not a member myself, I just chipped in a few hours.

FAD locations

Sat, 2010-11-20 17:54

are generally the same as the previous years.  Once they are deployed the locations are normally shown on the pgfc site and often other sites as well, so no, they are not secret.

Think of the open ocean as a desert, and the FAD is a tree. Shelter for bait, and even a place for the dolphin fish to sit out of the current.

these fads (fish attracting devices) attract small bait fish which then attract dolphin fish tuna and sometimes marlin! they work by providing food and shelter for the bait! its just a float in the water really but out wide thats great shelter for small bait

Food chain

Sat, 2010-11-20 23:26

Just a basic food chain. Algae/slime grows on the float, little fish eat it, bigger fish eat little fish etc.

fish are attracted to structure and out in the open water a chain and buoy are pretty substantial structure. Even small rafts of weed, cray buoys etc will hold amazing amoutns of fish life.

Good onya Jamie for flying the FW flag, and PGFC for keeping on pumping them out for everyone to use.

FADs are in

Sun, 2010-12-05 07:28

Just a quick one to let FW members know that as of yesterday that a few guys from Perth Game Fishing Club successfully launched the 6 FADs out from Rotto with the help of TAFE's "Maritime Image".

Plans are to assist Whitey in Jurien and launch 3 more from Seasport Charter boat "Valkoista" on tuesday and provide a new dimension to fishing for the recreational enthusiasts.

I know that Craig White has worked damn hard to get the 3 approved for use and deployment off Jurien which is a great effort.  I know how much work goes into the FADs and its great to see them happening.

Cheers
