PFD's

How many people wear a PFD when they go out in their boat fishing ?
I have often wondered what would happen if the boat went over and we had to scramble for jackets that are in the cabin. To that end at the boatshow I purchased a couple of Spinlock vests that you wear all the time. Quite small with gas inflate and go off when submerged for more than a couple of seconds. I have a Stormy but not really as comfortable as the Spinlock which is quite small with an excellent harness.
What do you do ?

If I am by myself I either
If I am by myself I either wear the stormrider light vest or during the colder months have a stormy jacket and and wetweather stormrider jacket as for the kids they have their life jackets on 2 seconds after they step on the boat and dont come off till they are back on dry land

I don't wear mine, but i do
I don't wear mine, but i do remove all pfd's from the locker, so if the boat goes down or over at least 1 should float free for access..
that and the fact i'm a floating island on my own..
last time i scuba'd i had to use 32kg of lead to make myself neutrally bouyant
I'm confidant it'd take more now
but after seeing these spinlock things might have a look.. although trying to get one to fit
might be a challenge :(

Axis Offshore Pro Hammar 150
I was bought this by my neighbours who we are very good friends with, after I started going out on my own. I generally only wear it when conditions are dicey, although a close encounter with a humpback earlier this year makes me think that all the time would be a better idea. It is Hydrostatic so is triggered by water pressure, not simply coming into contact with water - they say they are suited for people that use them in rough conditions or I suppose regular heavy rain? They're not cheap though - RRP or around $200, ebay for around $160
A recent trip to Kalbarri saw me wearing it each day due to the Mrs stressing out about going through the heads.
I bought her an auto inflatable one before the trip that it is not Hydrostatic as she won't come out when rough or raining. I bought the BLA branded one - cheapest place I could find was at Dinghy World in Como - great bunch of guys, really looked after me the weekend of the boat show - they don't do the boat show any more but have their own sale. It came in at under $100 and they had it in stock. RRD is $125 from memory.
Very friendly and helpful guys and are now my first point of contact for anything boating. I only had a price yesterday from them for a hydraulic steering kit my neighbour is chasing and without providing them any competitor's pricing, they came in cheaper than the other largish boating shops/chains that sell the same product. Looking after the little guy, and they're looking after me! (Their good quality marine carpet is well priced too and cheaper than the blue and yellow chain and higher grade)
Hope this helps...

The more I think about it
the more sense it makes. I do have quality jackets on the boat, but wouldnt wear them in "normal" circumstances. I have been looking at Stormies to wear all the time offshore, but these do look very appealing especially the Hammer, but $$$.
Then again what is a life worth.

Hammar...
Yep - and the Hammar replacement gas unit is expensive (around $70 I think) but only needs replacing around the five year mark (it has an LED indicator too). Glad I checked this before allowing the Mrs to jump in the pool with it on, thinking it needed replacing and was only around $25...

Self inflated
I bought two a few years back to wear in rough conditions or when fishing of the rocks , It was a hard call whether to buy self inflating or the manual pull cord to inflate , in conditions where the re some spray cover the Sid ethere a good chance they would be set off and inflate , I chose the manual inflate but for my young kids I would get the automatic units , the type I bought at the show where around $ 130 .oo replacement cartridge $ 38
