Perth to overlander question
Submitted by tailor marc on Wed, 2014-02-05 09:34
Hi Guys,
Heading off to Shark bay ,Exmouth/Coral bay tomorrow strait after work 4pm. Hoping to get to the overlander by midnight and sleep there in the car till sunrise then head off first light once it opens and get breakky
Want to know how long it takes you guys?
Used to take us 9 hours back in the no mucking around steep point trips towing a freezer etc.
Each other time i go up that way i always end up piss farting around in Gerro, kalbarri etc so im not to sure.
Seeing as though its night i WONT be doing 110. Will sit a bit under especially if there are roos/goats etc about.
Cheers

The stretch from Binnu to
The stretch from Binnu to Overlander doesnt seem to be anywhere as bad for roos as say Minilya Exmouth, maybe partly because the road is full width with a good cleared area on each side.
Exmouth rd theres more roos, narrower and nowhere to go.
When we go up we leave Gero at 4am so thru there before dawn with no problems.
Of course it only takes one though...

If it were me, I'd drive
If it were me, I'd drive through to north Hampton then wait out until morning. Overlander is only 2 hours up the road from there.
Roo's start to appear after North Hampton.

Roos
Last report I had on the roos and goats is that they start around Billabong and are thickest north of Wooramel. The trick with them is to dip your light once you spot them, that way they can see where to run out of your road.
If you are not stopping in Gero it should take around 9 hours depending on traffic

Minilya
There are plenty of goats north of Carnarvon through to Minilya and the roos are in plague proportions on the Coral bay road in from the main highway, this may have changed very recently with some rain up that way in the last week or so.

Towing from perth to Denham
Towing from perth to Denham took 10 hours. Sitting at 90, and keeping fuel stops and "comfort breaks" short!
Left perth at midnight, Gero at 5am, Denham at 10am.
Overlander is about 1:20 to Denham. From memory.

Hi Marc,Had a similar plan
Hi Marc,
Had a similar plan in August last year but going into Shark Bay. We left Mandurah at about 5:30 pm turned off at Overlander at about 2am give or take pulling a 4.5m tinny. Didn't have a problem with roos until we turned in towards Denham then they were everywhere. Pulled over shortly after and rolled out the swags until day break.
Cheers

Curious, lots of people seem to get up to Denham so if you were to stay in a 2x1 with kitchen and laundry, how much would you pay per night?

Galena bridge
If you have to stop at the Galena bridge where you cross the Murchison river be sure to slap on heaps of mossie repellent because they are thicker than the flies there at the moment.
People think that its a great spot to camp but forget that the water becomes stagnant and is a perfect mossie breeding spot

Keep going
Better to keep driving till you get to the big overnight bay 50km south of Billabong or the water tanks 60km south if you cant wait that long, at least you won't get eaten by the stinking little things.

If you're not towing and
If you're not towing and north of the river then it should be no more than 4 hours to Gero, from there to Overlander it's 280-290km's just over 2.5 hours if you maintain highway speeds. i've never had issues with wildlife in all my years driving that road until north of Overlander, at worse north of Billabong, i couldn't see any reason for not being able to sit on 110km i did it in a Mazda 3 last year no probs rolling into Canarvon at 9pm still hauling 110km and then some as needed. a 4pm leave from Perth and that should see you at overlander by 11.30 at the latest with a 30 min rest in Gero for dinner.

Last time I went up to denham I left at 2am and arrived in Denham at 10.30, worked out well as I had a good sleep before leaving and the roads where nice and quiet. The only places to look out for roos are around Eneabba and after Northhampton (Roos and goats).Have Fun.

Goats
Drove up yesterday and was so many goats haven't seen em like that for a long time. There has been a bit of rain so the verge is really green north of carnarvan so alum the animals are hanging close to the road. Was a bit of flood way south of minilya then the lynden was running. Only about a foot deep wasn't to bad Hope this helps ya out

why not go straight through.
why not go straight through. we have done it before. after the turn off it isnt realy that far from there. we worked all day and drove all night arriving in time for breakfast and a cuppa with the folks. not too bad a drive. as mentioned the road area is quite wide so plenty of time to see the night life. enjoy your trip

Late news
Spoke to the trucky I pick up from at 11.00 last night at the truck stop, no roos, plenty of goats and the usual mobs of cattle 30km south of Carnarvon
