Permatrim?

Guys i'm looking at getting a Permatrim for my 5m Seafarer, it has a 90etec.

Does anyone have these fitted, interested in hearing whether it does all the things they say it will. Also, is it difficult to fit?

Any feedback welcome.

Cheers

There is a lot of info on the board on this already, but to rehash - try repropping first, it sucks a lot less.

Fitted to a pile of shite  designed ally I bought a few years ago Albee. It had a 150 Honda on it , it made the boat a hell of a lot better ride than what it was and it sorted the porposing out and it planed far better at lower speed. I recommend them to certain boats for sure, definely the better foil for sure. Not so good for some dinghys though as they turn them into a danger boat with the broaching etc... Shouldn't be too hard to fit, mark the eight holes, drill and a  little bit of Sikaflex and bolt it up. Let us know if you fit one, with the difference it made .. Cheers!

With the Etec , l bet your running a viper prop. if so not the best prop for a heavy seafarer. you need a stern lifting prop.

This is where you need to look for all etec info good and bad. plenty of propping advice .  www.etecownersgroup.com

Im far from an expert on props..

But the prop seems pretty good as far as rev range and speed etc. Im getting about 34knts at 5200rpm wot, and cruising at 24knts at 3500rpm. Just on smooth water with swell it tends to porpise a bit, but that was with 4 adults and a child onboard.

To be honest i can live with it, ive had it out past West End twice now and it does all i want it too. Not sure what make of prop it is but i'll have a look tonight and see.

Bloody great boat to be honest!

Im just a curious bastard, always looking at options. Thanks for the link tho Holth, ive signed up on there and having a read now.

your wot rpms are good. What are you trying to achieve? .

The rogue is a good 4 blade prop for stern lift.

My etec was a bitch to prop as they can't swing a big prop due to small gear ratio.

Last resort

Tue, 2013-03-05 21:04

Adding any sort of trim fin to the outboard is an absolute last resort, try trimming the boat, shifting the weight distribution about, re propping and everything else before fitting one.

They are one of the major causes of smaller boats broaching and tipping over in a following sea by creating lift on the back end when its the last thing you need.

Thanks for the feedback guys

The only reason i would look at one would be to get on the plane quicker, and the porpising. Is porpising a trait of smaller length boats in general?

Checked out the prop, its a SST 176572,  13 7/8x17. Basically its reccomended by everyone who seems to know what they are talking about. I checked the engine height and its also spot on, seems she is pretty well setup as it is.

I dont think i need a Permatrim.. just more experience with the trim.

More HP ???

the boats only 5m. Over  HP ing on small boats is a recipe for disaster. The NT is full of them, IN Calm waters though.

Try what Carnarvonite said, get your weight distribution sorted out.

A mate of mine had a similar problem, fuel tank had been fitted right on the r s end of the boat, wallowed like a pig.

90hp would be a minimum on a 5m fiberglass boat and then put 4 adults and a child on board it is going to be slow out of the hole

I know i would rather have too much hp then not enough when needed.

Porposing

is often caused by having your motor trimmed out too far and incorrect weight distribution.
