Penn Spinfisher reels

These reels seem like pretty good bang for your buck. Anyone use them?

Was looking at them in my local the other day, the 850 looks ok but the 950 is damn BIG.

Looking for a decent reel for the boat that will bring up almost anything reliably without breaking the bank. Leaning toward a 850.

IMO, big clunky bullet proof reels. Drags not the smoothest but gets the job done.

I am still yet to see any other company offer a drag system that compares at the price ($100 if you shop around). Have had one for years and have pulled in some big fish with it.

Only issue I see is the lack of Bling but the fish dont discriminate against that anyway!

i had 2 850's a couple of seasons ago for sambo jigging. Pulled up more than 50 that season and reels were fine. One set back is that they are heavy but defs value for money and do the job fine.

I've got one, pretty smooth but yes it is heavy. If you don't mind the weight i can't reccomend anything else.

Best value for money reel on the Market. Will do what you want and more.
I just reverted back to using one of my 850s while a reel 3x the price that couldn't do the job was getting fixed, I came to the realisation I should have just kept the 850 and kept the money in my pocket.
For the record I have an American 850 and a chinese 850 & 950 the Chinese version is just as tough and less clunky

Mate I have both the usa

Mate I have both the usa made 8500 and chinese made 850, i don't really rate the 850, the casting on the body is not as good as the usa made ones. strong reels but heavy for the price, they are roughly $159.00 and go on special quite often, down to like $89.00-$99.00. But in my opinion for the $159.00 I would look at getting the new Pfluger Salt reels, they are certainly smoother,  stronger and have been upspeced, the 80 size has a max drag of 20kg, can handle 80lb braid, has carbon drag system, double anodised spool, and still has full metal body. much lighter than the Penns. When you consider the 18000sw stella's run 24kg max drag, that's not too bad for $159.00, range of sizes too from a 40, 50, 60 , 70 and 80. They also had great reviews at the tackle show in NSW the other month.

they are the best value reels

Fri, 2011-09-09 23:43

they are the best value reels imo!

ive caught all of my big fish lately on my 950ss and it has never struggled at all

i have one prob with it is when casting, the bail arm needs to be well away from the striker and handle at the bottom, or the bail arm flicks back every time

but i still love it!

go to Penn's website and have a look at the new reels on offer.

They have definitely up the ante in this game.

Penn conquer, Fierce and Battle and Sargus. The Torque is actually still made in the USA and look remarkably like a Van Staal!!

If Penn could solve the weight issue, I might even ditch my Shimano/Daiwa and get one!

Penn is definitely catching up with competition.

I just aquired a battle 4000 for $92 landed, seems smooth has ht100 drag clicker sounds nice 6 or so bearings think its 6.2:1 braid ready spool (no backing required), is a tad heavy, havnt tried it because the rapala xrap rod i bought for it snapped in the loungeroom while feeding line through the eyelets.... dont buy one had heard a few bad things about em but got mine for less than half price so thought ide try it.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PENN-BATTLE-8000-SPINNING-FISHING-REEL-BTL8000-NEW-/150646182905?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item23133653f9

for the extra coin i would give this a crack, much smoother than the 850. in saying that though for around the same price you can find plenty of good reels on ebay.
