PB Tailor

 Finally caught something bloody decent!!!

Headed out with old mate which i hadnt seen in almost 5 or more yrs.  Got to the spot and not even a nibble the sun was falling fast and out of the blue all these bait fish went nuts i grabbed me rod which had my 2 dolla chinese popper and casted it straite in to the fish. Within a few seconds the first of 2 fish was on.  All went dead for about 5-10 minutes with us both now throwing poppers out wen another bunch of jumping bait came thru again ive hooked on this time a little smaller.  Nothing else after that  So in the end I ended up with a 53cm and 46cm tailor both bigger than my 30 cm from Dunsbourgh last yr and also first ever fish on a popper for me :)  So a big thank u to wade for draggin my ass of the couch.

Ive bought all my lure from

Mon, 2012-09-03 08:33

Ive bought all my lure from ebay.  Hadnt used any of em till yesterday only tried the 1 and as u said i was stoked.  Sorta wished i had lighter line so i could feel more of a fight but the ol 20lb braid did the job fine.  and yeah saw the fish smash it on the surface both times.  The first 1 was hooked in the eye and the smaller 1 engulfed the popper.  bit of a mission trying to get the hooks out.

Most of my lures come from

Mon, 2012-09-03 09:30

Most of my lures come from ebay, the storm chug bug in the 08 and 11 sizes are my fav tailor lure. A popper that trolls well and works great cast/retrieve, ball bearing rattle that weighs up the bum for casting and they float. Cheap as from the states, any colour will work, I have more on quantas colours. I usually remove the front hook and crush the barbs, but after a missed mack hook up over summer, the front hooks are goin back on. Gold halco teistys and for dirty water the green bomber 15a are other cheap option. Not sayin the 30 buck lures arent worth it, but id hate to loose them all the time. With access to a tinny, trolling enables you to find the fish and use ultra light gear that makes it fun. A chopper on a beach rod is hardly fair!

I always bleed my fish as

Mon, 2012-09-03 17:40

I always bleed my fish as soon as they are caught if i intend to smoke them. Im not sure about Tailor, but the Aussie Salmon are really oily. Because of this i will firstly head and gut them, and butterfly them open. Then rub them down with a good of salt and leave for a few hours in the fridge to dry out a bit and get some of the oil out. Overnight is best. Then clean them off really well and pat them down with paper towel to dry., Put a few slashes into the meat ready for the 'marinade'. I just add a little honey or maple syrup and rub it in, then a bit of brown sugar. Give this a little bit of time to soak in.

Then straight into the smoker.

I have mostly used Manuka woodchips for some added flavour.
