Seems lots of people don't

Seems lots of people don't like fishing the full moon but I do. There's more light about & that makes it much easier for the predators to see thier prey & fortunately, the lures I like to throw around for Tailor at night. The prey can see the predators much easier to & that seems to have them sticking much closer to cover than they do on dark nights (new moon). I find I get plenty of fish on full or new moon, it's just that I have to be more accurate with my casting on the full moon so I can get right in tight against the structure where the baitfish are usually holding. I've also found plenty of predators come up into the shallows to hunt on the full moon & I consistently catch tailor & flathead on lures over the flats in the river when it's a full moon.

All sorts of wives tales abound

Most will suggest that a couple of days either side is a great time to fish. I do know the occies invade the cray pots on a full moon but I am not aware of any reason LB fishos shouldn't do well given the right tide and conditions. Personally I find the experience of fishing on a balmy night under a full moon to be quite pleasing.

I have had good and bad sessions, I pay more attention to tide, wind and swell in that order

as rig said look more at the tides, wind then swell and moon phase. you catch big fish by the moonlight but bigger fish are caught during tides moving ;)

Got to agree about the tides

Sun, 2012-01-08 20:00

Got to agree about the tides being far more important than the moon phase. The tides are biggest during the full & new moon, it's no coincedence that those are usually the two best fishing times. It's not so much about the light as I mentioned earlier, though I still think that makes some difference, it's about the amount of water moving around. I pay attention to tides, barometric pressure, swell, winds then moon phase in that order. I also pay very close attention to moon rise & set as I find those two times to produce peak fishing each day. Barometric pressure over 1020 usually produces good fishing IME.

All too complicated

Moon phase on a full moon means the moon will be full yes??? Barometric pressure is the rate of my farts yes?? High tide means good fishing. Full moon means  light that would otherwise be created by our lamps. A line in the water means a chance to catch a fish.

Like your thinking Vince. We fished Gnaraloo last year on a full moon and it didn't make a rats arse of a difference, we actually caught more. On the water with light winds and a line in...... mint.

Yep I agree 100%...........

If its fishable go!

It depends on where you fish too. One place I go, if the swell is up and the tide is high ( which normally means the moon is bright) I can fish from the beach because there is enough water over the reef.(good fishing usually)

When the tide and swell are low I fish from the reef and cast into the deep water.........(good fishing usually too)

If its in between I move down the coast a little and fish off the beach into a hole or gutter.(good fishing usually also)

If the moon phase does make a heap of difference Im not sure exactly what and think it must depend on where you are, and what your fishing for,........too many variables to say whether its a good thing allround or not for me......

I don't think anyone is

Mon, 2012-01-09 09:35

I don't think anyone is saying that you should only fish a certain moon phase/tide/wind or whatever, just what effect people think a full moon specifically has on fishing. If we limited ourselves to only fishing a certain moon phase under the right conditions we would be lucky to go fishing once a year. I also think that we would all agree that it doesn't matter what the moon phase/weather, if you can get out there, go. Your not going to catch anything if your line isn't in the water.

For me its window of opportunity, you catch fish with a line in the water not studying charts & computer screens

Use to keep a fishing dairy, trying to figure it out. What struck me is there is no pattern apart from tides. But I have found that it is tide changes rather than high tide. I had as much luck fishing the bottom of the tide than the top, with the inbetween not producing as well. As for the almanac, I have caught no fish on black days, and killed a pig on the supposed low days.

Marron is an exception, full moon makes them skiterish, so new moon certainly better.

By the way, given up on the dairy.

No problems this full moon

Tue, 2012-01-10 08:32

Full moon seemed to work for tailor last night. I got down the beach at 7.40 and by 8.30 had caught 15 tailor (released 7 kept 8). They were only choppers though, between 30 and 37cm. They were frenzied, couldn't even get any tension in the line after the cast before they were hooked.

Now I am the world's worst fisherman so I think that speaks volumes for the full moon argument.

Nothing wrong with the full moon. We cleaned up on the tailor (40-55cm) last night around cervantes & there were plenty of appearances from other species.

Full Moon

Full Moon means bigger tides and stronger currents. Certainly turns the pelagics on over here.

Challenger beach is just too bare I think, yeh sometimes tailor are caught but I think you would have a better chance at long point for tailor. Or even better, go a bit further south and find a gutter at secret harbor

The full moon does have

Wed, 2012-01-11 13:19

The full moon does have effect what sort of natural bait/food is around, some will hide or like marron to shit scarced to hang around.

as long as your bait is in the water that's all that matters.

When fishing

Thu, 2012-01-12 13:26

in Leeman you will kill the pig on a full moon.  Especially in 10 meteres or less of water.  The corner break is a fantastic spot on a full moon.  Had a friend watch the dhuie's go for his bait in shallow and the water was so clear he coudld see everything.  The locals will tell (if they give away secrets hahah) the full moon in Leeman is spot on.  Even near the green marker and the reefs just in front of the crayfishermans jetty.

As the dhue's swim in close, shallow water, especially on a full moon, looking for crays and other fish, thats a known fact also in Leeman, I would assume pretty well up and down the coast where you get good reef systems in close.
