Octupus presentation as bait

Ok my question is simply this,

1 When using occy for bait what is the best way to present it for bottom bashing (assuming paternostr(spelling)rig).
2 Do you leave the skin on or off.
3 occy or squid or both?
4 Other tips appreciated

Cheers

Skin off

Mon, 2008-05-05 11:44

Definately skin the occy or it will end up like a bloated blob on your hook in very quick time.
Make sure your hook points are well clear of the bait. Don't bury the hook in the flesh in an attempt to hide it as you will not get a hook up when you strike.
Go squid and mulie cocktails on one hook and maybe occy on the other.
That's just my preferences, but there are no hard and fast rules, just take extra care with presentation and you will get better results.

Spot on Andy skin of for sure ,i like squid and a fish bait or the two combined,I soak herring fillets i tuna oil overnight then freeze them up, they work well its good to have a mix of bait as one thing can work ,where as others can sit all day and not get touched..

ewwwwwww thats the worst

Mon, 2008-05-05 18:22

ewwwwwww thats the worst thing about cuttlefish and squid for fresh bait, atleast occy doesnt do that, but as the others said, make sure your hook barb is exposed dont want it buried in your bait, i presonaly like to use either a whole mulie or half as an added attractant

Also when using a paternoster rig, we always use 3 hooks and if deeper water each one has a lumo suid. normally try squid + mulie on the bottom, occy/cuttlefish and fish strips on the above 2.

Marinated occy works a treat aswell, cut it up the night before and skin and de-sucker it as Matt said, then soak it in chumline overnight

ocky!

Mon, 2008-05-05 22:41

Yes, unfortunately many shops are selling either imported or SA ocky. I'm relying on my familys crayboats to supply me fresh Tworocks craypot ocky atm.

I skin my ocky, take the suckers off and squid is also a good bait....mix it up & away you go!

Is there anything

Tue, 2008-05-06 11:56

Is there anything specifically bad about SA/imported occy, or is it just because its frozen instead of fresh?

Shop occy It's already off

Shop occy
It's already off and gone purple not good
I dive for mine over summer and normally get enough to see me through the year but then you get mates coming over and raiding your freezer when your not home , I now have a good supply stashed at Busselton out of his reach.
