North or South?

Hi,

I'm hiring an SUV in mid-June for a week so I can go on a solo fishing trip.

The decision I have to make is do I go North to Exmouth, Kalbarri, etc or South to Esperance, Albany and so on?

I know either way it's going to be an adventure, but I would appreciate some input based on the time of year and other peoples experiences of fishing in June.

All of my fishing will be shore-based and I currently have a 12' Penn Prevail with a Saragosa 8000 using 30lb braid and 40lb leader. I will also be taking a spare 8' Ugly Stik with me.

The reason I'm leaning towards south is because I've read that in the Shark Bay area, it's best to have at least 50' braid in case you hook a GT or something similarly big. I don't want to change my line because it's just been spooled and I'm saving for another spool that I'll use for 50lb braid or heavier.

Would appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.

30lb braid in shark bay

Tue, 2017-05-23 20:58

hey mate,
i personally always go north havent been south for fishing so cant comment a great deal.
ive done trips up to shark bay for the last few years and my heaviest combo is 30lb and its been more than enough. i prefer to use my 20lb gear as its just more fun to use, we mostly fish from a boat in the shalows of the bay around shallow reef and rarely get stitched up (have never seen a GT in shark bay personally)
my landbased fishing has been hit and miss but ive taken the same reels on beach rods to kalbarri, exmouth and coral bay and done alright on them (did hook some unstoppables in coral bay).
that being said when u say SUV i think all wheel drive, this will limit youre options up north and i wouldnt be suprised if south was the same.
hope this helps a bit,
regards Niko

Think about the weather.............North in June can be quite pleasant, South can be cold and wet.

I know which way I'd rather be heading in June !

Cheers for all the advice so far. Yeah, I'm feeling convinced to go North.

Yeah, it's just a RAV4 Niko so it's limited to fairly easy terrain.

Thanks fuzzy79, I'll def be looking into a charter for one of the days I'm up there. ;)

Tangles is the way to go- he is not a Charter Tour. He does Landbased Tours.

Company name: Kalbarri Land Based Fish Tours. Here's a Link.

I'll be up there as well in a couple of weeks.

20lb braid max you can also get some monster squid from the main jetty there but highly doubt of gts in sharkbay plenty of 80cm tailor if you can find them

and for north or south. north north north north way better landbased fishing head up to exmouth and just walk the beach throwing lures for almost everything or u could go south walk the beach and throw lures for ahhhh umm salmon i guess

either way have have a great trip and good luck

think you should just take that big risk of being in the unfortunate position of hooking on to a huge GT.

Haha yeah starting to put the itinerary together, def a couple of days in Kalbarri but because I've got a week off I'll be heading up to Exmouth. Any recommendations on charters up there?

I expect a few of the operators will be further north by June so that's the main reason I'm asking on here.

My missus hires cars heaps & has done for years. Check what the conditions on the insurance for the RAV4. I'm betting it's through budget & they do not cover you unless you are on a sealed road. So if you hit a roo or break down, it will come out of your pocket. Not all hire companies are the same but the majority are. Even hiring a Prado through Avis you will find yourself in the same boat. Bloody ridiculous & not an issue if all goes well but if you come unstuck, it can get real expensive real fast. Just be aware.

As for what direction to go, I'd go see Tangles. I went up with a mate we have in common & we went out with him. Tangles was pretty off it because we had a bad day. PB tailor & mulloway for 2 out of the 3 of us & I landed several mullas up to a meter. Top bloke, bloody funny & very accomodating. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Thanks for the tips, I'll check out the 'conditions of use' in case I can't go on unsealed roads. It's actually through Bayswater Car Rental, I always go with them, their top cover option reduces liability to $0.

Yeah, I'll likely give Tangles a call before I go, really keen to spend a couple of days in Kalbarri.

 Ah yep, Bayswater Rentals

Thu, 2017-05-25 20:56

Ah yep, Bayswater Rentals are one of the better ones & you will be covered as long as you are on a designated road. So if it's marked as a road on a map, you're covered but if it's only marked as a track you will not be covered.

If you haven't already, check out Tangles FB page - Kalbarri Land based Fishing Tours.

+1 for Tangles at Kalbarri.

the small cost of doing a Kalbarri tour with Tangles is nothing compared to what you can learn from Rob, he is a legend and whilst nothing is ever guaranteed....if the swell cooperates you have probably your best chance EXER of that mega Mulla!

just do it.........enough of us have recommended him, I hope you get the hint
