My mum smoked for 50 years+
My mum smoked for 50 years+ and gave it up when her GP told her not to bother making a doctors appointment for next years annual check up, most likely be dead before then. She gave up on the spot and lived another 22 years albeit the last 5 on oxygen. Hard habit to kick I am told.

Used an E-Cig to give up and
Used an E-Cig to give up and I know a lot of people who've done the same
After about a month of using one I had some allergy to one of the flavours that was in the liquid I was using so I switched to the nicabate lozenges which tore the crap out of my mouth/throat
It was at that point I stopped and realised that all I was doing was chasing nicotene for what?
That was 2014 and I haven't wanted a cigarette since
I had a cigar on a few occasions but nothing about it made me want to jump back into smoking or chasing nicotene

Yes
I used this book back in 1994 and it is very good. By the time I was ready, I stopped overnight and never touched another.

I'll have to get a copy.
I'll have to get a copy. Started when I was 14 & by the time I was 18 I was on 2 x 50g white ox per week & been that way ever since. I've tried e ciggies, gum, patches, hypno & cold turkey. No dice. Got nothing to lose so hopefully it works. I'd like to see 50 at least (40 now).
Cheers Travis.

Hard to give up
I tried to give up a few times - had given up for over 5 years in my early days and went straight back to it. This stretch I have been off them for over 11 years. Used the patches for a few days and then went cold turkey. I think you have to be ready to give up as the will power needs to help not hinder. Mind you, if they were cheap and didn't kill you then I'd probably be still smoking today. Terrible things.

Its been 14 years cold
Its been 14 years cold turkey for me, I really wanted to give up and was ready. Main inspiration was meeting my future wife who was a non-smoker and very fit.
But jeez I just dont know how guys afford to smoke these days at 30-40 bucks a packet. I think it was $11 for a packet of PJ supers when I gave up and I used to smoke a pack a day, more on the weekends if ging out pubbing on the piss.

Been about 10 years now for me
Since I have had a ciggie. Made a bet with a mate of mine who earns reasonable money, but can he rather thrifty, that from New Years to September I could give up. The loser had to fork out the bill for lunch at the raffles hotel (so if I had a smoke in that time I lost). I lasted the distance and have never had a smoke since. Lunch for the 2 of us cost him about $600, but also saved me thousands over the years as well as a far cleaner bill of health.

I started when I got my
I started when I got my first job at 17 and could afford them.
Soon I was up to a pack a day and smoked pretty much full time from then on. A lot of people back then smoked and it really wasn't a big deal.
Tried for a few years to give up, one week here, a couple weeks there, Zyban, champax, patches, gum anything that they said would help I tried and
nothing lasted more than about 4 weeks then I would be back smoking, mainly because I did enjoy it and my mind didn't want to give it up even though I thought I did.
It did become extremely expensive though but that still didn't stop me.
Then 3 years ago I found myself helping my partner with her mother who was suffering from emphysema which Doctors said was caused by her smoking.
I stayed with them both for the last two weeks of her mothers life and those two weeks were some of the most heartbreaking two weeks of my life.
Seeing a previously able bodied woman deteriorate so quickly, struggling to breath or do anything for herself any more and seeing her daughter acting so brave around her mother and then sobbing uncontrollably when we were alone was hard and there was nothing we could do.
She was beyond help and was sent home to die, when that moment came.....well....No one would ever want to put any of their family members through such an event.
That did it for me and my mind just decided now was the time because I didn't want anyone in my family to go through this with me.
I stopped cold turkey over night, didn't even finish my last packet and never even had a craving, even after a few beers and with people smoking around me, nothing, it was as if I never smoked.
My mind just clicked and that was 3 years ago now after smoking for 27 years.
The damage might have already been done but I feel a lot better not smoking and even though I have put on a few pounds....I am healthier now.
And as a HUGE plus, because I smoked a pack a day and actually kept a tab of how much money I was saving. I physically saved that money in a seperate account and put it aside.
Then after around 18 Months I had saved $24,000....that's $24,000 I would have just puffed away !!
So the most logical thing to do was reward myself and off I went and bought another boat after being boatless for a few years and have never looked back
You have to really WANT to give up for your own reasons and not just say you want to.
As hard as it is, it is doable and it won't take long before you are really glad and proud you gave up....plus you will have a lot more fishing gear to play with or even a new boat
My fishing spots are so secret........... even the fish don't know where they are !!

Quit on Champix and was off them for 18months. Have been smoking again for 3 years. Will never take Champix again due to the violently interactive dreams I had.

Still trying to give up and I know I'll get there eventually.
But do you know what? All those people I know who used to smoke and have now become the biggest hipper crits of smoking, you all have shallow lives.

First packet of smokes I
First packet of smokes I ever brought was when I was seven. I remember smoking them down at the swamp in gossie. From there I remember my mates old lady use to give us 5-6 smokes a day each. I reckon I fully took up smoking when I was 13 and was dealing them on the oval every morning tea and lunch. Can't remember how many times I got suspended from school for smoking but it was a few.
When I was approximately 30 I woke up one Sunday morning and said f*** it I'm going to give up smoking. I smoked all that day then around 8:30 that night I had my last smoke with my neighbour an gave him the rest of my packet. It's been around 13 years now. To chicken shit to try one again just in case I enjoyed it.

Had my last smoke on the way to hospital after getting 40% x 1st and 2nd degree burns in an industrial accident. Had been in hospital for about 3 weeks when I asked the missus for a smoke, she said she will ask the nurse if its ok.
Nurse asked missus to go outside and she shut the door then started to call me for everything in language I still don't use today, what new skin I had she blistered off with her tirade. Never asked or had a cigarette since

I smoked for about 19-20
I smoked for about 19-20 years from the age of 14. Made about 5 or 6 (or 10...I actually lost count) attempts to quit using everything from gum to champix to e-cigs and just couldn't stop sneaking off to buy a packet. Then as people have mentioned, something clicked in my head and I bought my last packet 30/12/15 and upgraded to a better quality e-cig. Had the odd one here or there socially for a few months, then April last year smoked my last one while camping with a mate of mine up at North Pool near Wiluna. Have since gone from high nicotine e-juice, to medium, and am now on low nicotine, looking at dropping to no nicotine in the next 6 months and putting it away just to pull out when I'm having a few beers. Why our access to electronic cigarettes is restricted is bloody beyond me. They may look a bit "hipster" but whatever, they work for me and my lungs are so much better for the change

I've seen reports saying
I've seen reports saying they are worse than ciggies. I've also seen reports saying they cause no harm at all. Personal research tells me my asthma has backed off since taking up the ecigs, so they can't be all that bad. And I'm using them as a stop smoking device, so don't plan on using them for much longer. Main reason being because if they are bad and do cause cancer or whatever, then we might not know for another 10 or 20 years

E-cig study
The report you are most likely thinking of unc was about the work of a colleague of mine at the Telethon Kids Institute.
They found that e-cig juice has a damaging effect on the lungs and causes reduced lung function, although some are worse than others.
If anyone is interested in reading the work i could probably put it up (depending on copyright).

Good on you all
to those who have and those that are wanting to!
I was another 13 year old durrie trader at school and smoked for 13 years and like you woody the wife to be was incentive to give them the flick. I chose my time being a change of job, went into it as a non smoker and stuck with it. Surprising how many people offer you a smoke on site when you have stopped. Lol.
I am also guilty of having 1 from time to time with a mate or my old man but don't feel guilty for doing so and have realised that for me , stopping is just as easy as starting again . A desicion!

durrie smokers
think about this smokers contrbuit millions to the federal goverment every year , if you were an ice addict and asked for help to get of it you would have every goverment department helping you , its so funny state and federal goverments wont help you give up the durries all they do is put scary adds on tv saying what might happen to you if you smoke , in saying that my mum has sucked down her 20 a day since she was 13 and is 87 now and iis the fittest old girl in her nursing home

Why is it up to the
Why is it up to the government to make you quit? At the end of the day it's a personal choice to smoke or not and your own decision to quit.
I did it years ago as I was sick of waking up every day coughing my guts out. Made a $1k bet with a mate and we haven't touched them for 25 years.
YOU HAVE TO BE DINKUM TO WANT TO GIVE THEM UP!

G'dayI quit almost 32 years
G'day
I quit almost 32 years ago, a present to myself for my 30th birthday.
The catalyst for me was thinking about some things I "shoulda, coulda, woulda" done when I was younger, then realised smoking was going to be another regret in my future.
Then the difference between a half arsed attempt to quit, I'd had several, you know where you say "I'm trying to give them up", yeah pathetic, then changed to
"I don't smoke"
That was it
Cheers
Rod
PS They say nothing worse than a reformed smoker, yes there is, can you guess who?
