North Mole will usually have better fishing for larger fish than South Mole but get there early to get your spot before the crowds arrive. South Mole will still produce Tailor, albeit usually smaller & not as many as North Mole, & a range of smaller fish like Herring, Tarwhine etc. So if you want to go after bigger species, North Mole is the go, if you are using lighter gear & bread & butter fish are your thing, then give the South Mole a crack.
i would suggest south mole as Graeme said may even be worth taking a squid jig down there generally find there are quiet a few hanging around the weed beds, all depending on the weather though
personal preference really i like to use beak hooks with herring. are you planning on fishing during the night if so definatly worth using glow sticks! and use a floating berly cage if the herring are around thats a deadly combo
yeh, i set up a rig with a floating burley cage and about 140cm trace to a beak hook about the size of a ten sent coin, and you would reconmend putting a glow stick near the burley cage? yeah night time, afternoon to night
trace as in wire trace? if so you dont need wire trace for herring as such. yeah sounds perfect you could even go a hook size smaller and give that a shot. put the glow stick 3/4 of the way up from the hook so if its 140 cm put it at about 100 cm's, just so its visible for you to see and also the fish to get attracted too. great thing about glow sticks too is if your leaving your rod out you can see if you have a hook up quiet easily.
I think he meant 100cm away from the hook. My preference is to put it as close to the hook as possible but that's me. I really only use glowsticks when I'm Tailor fishing & I actually put them on the first hook in the gang, you obviously can't do that on a Herring rig. Duck into a tacklestore & buy a couple of sabiki (baitchaser) rigs before you go. Herring love them & it can be very entertaining hooking 2 or even 3 at a time. Some sabiki rigs come with 6 hooks so have to be cut down to three as it's illegal to use more than 3 hooks (not counting gangs) on any one fishing line.
Yes you can still use a berley cage with a baitchaser rig if you want. I put a cage on the bottom of the baitchaser rig instead of a sinker personally. You can use lures for herring if you like. I've caught plenty of herring on 10g twistys & small minnow type lures. The green lumo tube you mentioned works well but I usually put it on a long shank hook. If you can get them then maggots are the absolute top bait for herring.
You can do but honestly hillaries has been pretty quite lately for most species. If you want to stay NOR I reckon you should go up to Mindarie Marina, the fishing is usually pretty reliable up there or you could throw some lures or whitebait around the river & get into some of the Tailor.
You make plans like me & the blokes that I go north with.... the plan changes every 2 mins until everyone finally comes to an agreement, then it changes another 10 times. North Mole is pretty good for a wide range of species. Good luck.
Yeah you can even use those Sabiki rigs they do the trick with herring i also use them to catch scallies works a treat! Graeme do you find that putting the glow stick as close to the hook as possible or even on the gangs works better rather then further away? cant say i have ever used it actually attatched to the gangs but would be interesting to see how it goes!
If your hitting up north mole recruit i recommend taking a big rod down if you manage to get yourself some herring chuck a livie on there and you may have the chance of catching something a bit bigger :)
I can't give an opinion on glowsticks with herring as I don't use them when herring fishing but I think I might get more strikes from Tailor when I have the glowstick on the shank of the front hook than I do with it further up the line. If a tailor comes to investigate the glow the bait is right there for it to have a crack at. I've never fished side by side with someone using the glowstick further away though so I'm only speculating really.
i might have to give the old glow stick on the shank a go. I've always had my glow stick above my trace when fishing still seems to work fine guess its only 50 cm's away from a smelly oily mulie
