No Crays in my pots yet
Submitted by MandurahMatt on Thu, 2013-10-31 20:10
Ok so I've had my pots in the water for over a week and not had any luck yet I'm putting them on sand hard up against ledges in about 10m of water! Seeing plenty of action from the divers, but wondering how everyone else is going with their pots??

Keep moving them...
I'm a relative newbie to cray potting, this being my third season, but having fished with mates this season who have been doing it for ages I can offer the following advice:
Keep moving the pots 'till you find some crays. Try different types of ground, crays live in more places than heavy limestone ledges in shallow water. Remember the commercial guys do this for a living, and you won't find many of their pots on limestone in 10m of water. If this was a good time to be fishing that way, they'd be doing it, as less travel = greater profits ;)
There's a reason the commercial guys are fishing deeper, and it's got a lot to do with catching more crays.

Reef
At the moment you will need them on the reef.. Whites wont start for atleast 2 weeks so put them in the sand then.. Us pros are chasing reds at the moment so the same edge you on put them on the reef instead of on the sand for now.. And hopefully you will get a couple..
This time of year is very hard for pots so don't be detured by catching nothing at the moment.. And it will get harder in the next week or so before it gets a whole lot better..
Hope this helps

there is another reef 3 or 4
there is another reef 3 or 4 mile north west of James Service, plenty of Pro's used to pot this reef and probably still do. Good ledge when coming from Mandurah comes from 20m up to about 10
When i was potting out of Mandurah we picked upa few most times on Jame service, but as Belly said, we dropped the pots on the reef. Watch the sounder wait for a drop them drop them. If you can find deeper water (And it does exist) over James service, say 15-20m you will find crays. Key, drop the pots in the holes on the reef or as close too. We never lost a pot there from being stuck in the reef so its not too bad.

Weed banks
I had a good ip years back to drop your puts othe weed banks close to the reef areas , crays have got to get through the weed ( protection area as well ) to set up home ithe rocks My 2 cents worth
