Newby Boaters - OMG
I am very fortunate to have moved onto the Mandurah canals a year ago. And have enjoyed this greatly.
In the last 2 months an elderly neighbour put his house on the market and finally sold it to overseas buyer's moving to Oz.
He had a 26ft odd Glasscraft on a lifter which he also sold to them as a package.
They came down after one passed his skippers ticket 1 week ago.
I noticed they struggled to get the boat on the lifter so went over to help and they asked where do you get fish. I explained a few general spots fairly close in to discover to my horror they went 50k's out trying to fish as newby's. Needles without any spots nor sounder knowledge they caught SFA.
I certainly explained how risky this was as they didn't even log on etc etc.
After my explaining I think they might stay close in and chase some whiting instead whilst they get experience. Bloody lucky the wind didn't pick up. They did not know about broaching etc in a following sea.
Wow is all I can say.

Newby Boaters
Just as well our local Sea Rescue are very proficient coz looks like they may be needed by your neighbors, and sounds as if the Skippers Ticket was a quicky and not much knowledge was imparted or actual experience taken note of before handing it over, the ammount of idiots on our waters never ceases to amaze me.

I doubt it, they would be
I doubt it, they would be unlikely to have
So Crasny would have noticed a few months later that noone was home and the boat was gone...
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

I did indeed
I don't think after the friendly way I explained it and the considerable risks they would venture that far. Also said Crab season is only 6 weeks away, and it might be better to try for them while they get used to boating.
I was cringing.

yeah, i sometimes think that
yeah, i sometimes think that the skippers ticket should be made a bit more involved.....pretty newby boater myself, and after getting the skippers ticket, can say that it really doesnt prepare you very well for ocean trips. having said that, they guy i did it through was really good, and very happy to offer to come out on board when we started venturing out. we were lucky enough to know some more experience boater friends who could help us out, so didnt need to take him up on the offer, but thought that was a very useful option to have.

And forgot to say above
I haven't seen that craft move in the whole year. So probably hasn't had a service or run for some time

Scary stuff
It's a bit of a worry some of the boats you see heading out wide with 5 or 6 people on board a 6m tinny and they dis appear over the horizon.

maybe they need to do
maybe they need to do something like a car log book where you need to do so many hours on the water with a license holder before you can get yours. i know everyones gotta start somewhere but there are too many cowboys out there
