New Surf Combo
Well I've decided its finally time to upgrade the simple but faithful old fibreglass jarvis walker and spinfisher combo to something a bit more modern and lighter with a bit more power
I'm after a 12ft rod around 8-15kg probably matched up with an 8k Baitrunner D, and hoping to keep the combo under/around the $500 mark
Mostly casting baits for tailor, snapper and while i'm dreaming hopefully mulloway haha so I don't think the cast weight will need to be too massive, but I'd still like it to have a little extra power for anything bigger that may swim passed
So far I've had myself set on the Penn Prevail, but after a trip to the shop the Samaki Zing Surf and the Assassin Amia stick out too.. they just bump the budget a bit too far
Are there any others I'm overlooking or does anyone have any reccomendations?
I'll also be after a quality mono to spool it too, generally go for the Berkley Big Game, are there any others I should check out?
Cheers

Assassin med xl. If you
Assassin med xl.
If you don't mind the extra length there was one advertised on Gumtree for $250 down Rockingham way. I was considering it but no $$$ at the moment.

I can't fault the prevail. I
I can't fault the prevail. I have the 13.5 ft version and it's my go to surf rod.
I have a 9ft Zing as well for Lure throwing, unfortunately three quarters of the guides have cracked in it.... The reel seat also creaks a little... It is the only rod I have had this happen to... form your own conclusion on that one. I loved the blank, but believe the fittings are sub standard.
I actually replaced the Zing with a 9ft Amia with Micro guides, too new to form conclusions on its longevity but I am happy with it to date.

Personally I wouldnt use the
Personally I wouldnt use the Amia for bait fishing and beach bashing, a fantastic lure rod but out of place chucking baits and sinkers.
Have a look at the Assassin Beachmaster series, either go the light or medium if you're looking for a bit more power. Can get them for around $300 shipped from South Africa.
Otherwise have a look at the Rovex Aureus surf series, under 100 bucks but are great rods. The 12 foot model is built on the old Spinfisher Big Game blank I think.
As mentioned above the Prevails are great as are the Sensor Surfs.
So many options available, you will probably be happy with any that get suggested.

Amia
Hutch there is also the Amia Kob Special rated 2 - 4oz that was designed for chasing Kobs off the South African coastline, this would be perfect for the typical bait casting rigs used here ... ganged mulie and star sinker setup.
Then it doubles up to be able to throw the bigger lures when required as well , great all rounder imo.

Shipping
Just for everyone's info , and not having a go at anyone.
Freight with Dhl( best value for money I have found with regards to price, timing and breakages) is a minimum of $210 On a beach master .They may be slightly cheaper options, but chance are
your Rod won't arrive in one piece and on time.
The price of the cheapest beach master In South African Rands plus the freight , after you have paid GST you will be around the $ 470 to $500 mark (depending on the exchange rate and bank fees).
You are going to end up paying more than you would supporting your local retailer .(who I'm sure you rely on for many other tackle items) add to that no warranty and no back up service
remember its because of people supporting the Australian business you earn a living from, that you are able to enjoy all the things earning a living requires .
Tight lines Everyone .

Out of interest have you actually bought one from SA?
If so, where exactly did you purchase it from?

Postage
Mattyv is on the money,
I was just quoted $270 for postage on a rod and hand full of lures (450 grams )from South Africa . That was going through a courier company , but its the only way to go as I have had to much stuff disappear or get damaged over the years going with the local post office.
The rod and lures that I had quoted are not available in Australia or I would just try to get it local .
After breaking a imported 3 piece a few years back and having to wait months for a return section - its just not worth the hassle if its available here.

I agree to some extent, most
I agree to some extent, most places charge hundreds for shipping over but if you shop around you can get one shipped for around 100 bucks, sometimes less which still works out to be a lot cheaper than buying local

Eupro
i have a Eupro cyclone 17-40lb and 10'. It's perfect for tailor, salmon and mulloway went to Kalbarri last year and landed a few nice sized tailor and my first mulloway around the metre mark. Perfect for surf casting for tailor with a mulie rigged up with a big 3-6 ounce sinker IMO
Fishing the swan for bream, it's just an obsession

Have the exact combo myself, you will not be dissapointed!
just be careful with the plastic reel seat as I took a chunk out over tightening, own fault though
