New Snapper Rig... (idea)
Submitted by JohnSorrell on Wed, 2010-02-24 12:38
Just an idea to solve the problem of bait spinning and dropping tail first, when using a running sinker & rigging bait head first.
By placing a small bean or barrel sinker between the snelled hooks!
My theory is, it will increase hookups on the drop, because your bait will fall either head first or horizontally like it would if it was alive :)
Maybe even better for rigging a whole squid (hood first), to make it look like it is alive and swimming backwards...
Anyway... I can't go snapper fishing for a couple of weeks, so if anyone wants to give it a go, can ya get me some feedback...

When you're baits at the
When you're baits at the bottom, the mulie/squid will be backwards (maybe the fish dont care, but then it doesnt matter which method used). If you driftbait it, the sinker will fall first pulling the mulie down head first anyways (and you'll get more action as the sinker will be freeswinging). Would hide the sinker more though (perhaps a pencil cinker would work best?)

Yeh... i always bait up
Yeh... i always bait up backwards for every species except tailor... just seems obvious that most fish swallow bait head first... otherwise theyd get spines & scales stuck in their throat :)

John, I was looking at making up a similarf bait casting rig
However, I was looking at using a slightly hollowed out spoon sinker, cupped under the head of the mulie.

I dont think a Snapper will
I dont think a Snapper will be fussed about a pillie. They just eat it.
It appears its the bigger baits that get swallowed head first?
What are your thoughts?

'Fresh' pilchards are no
'Fresh' pilchards are no different as they also have sharp spines on the dorsal fin... (Bloody hurts when crushing them up and get a spine stuck under your finger nail)
Anyway... whatever the bait, if it swims in one direction, then it will have some form of friction when rubbed the wrong way.... :)

the one downside of this rig
the one downside of this rig is when your rig hits the bottom the bait will be either on the bottom or snug against your line so it wont be moving around freely

Basically this rig is not
Basically this rig is not for deep stuff or drifting, thinking more of an anchored inshore soft plastic style... let it hit the bottom, then wind n drop again... just for the better chance of a hookup on the drop... and if youve ever fished plastics, youll find they get smashed 90% of the time on the drop... so why not bait?

hey john try it out mate and
hey john
try it out mate and let us know. i like trying to think of new rigs too.
(i've never actually rigged up a mulie that way on snelled or ganged hooks)
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

id still have the lead above
id still have the lead above the tail because if the fish bites half way through the body and feels that lead, may throw/spit the bait....a nd this way u can quickly change the weight to suit current and conditions..good to see some1 having a think ouside the box
