New reel, then new rod

OK I'm keen enough with my fishing interest to spoil myself a bit and upgrade to a nicer combo.

I mostly bottom bash with bait in water 40-150m at present but am interested in possibly deeper water and also jigging. I have some cheaper combos at the moment that work but they aren't ideal. Penn GT (65 lb braid) and TLD25 (80 lb braid). I will convert these to trolling use or the Penn is good for guests with the level wind.

I will continue to use the new outfit for bottom bashing but want a reel that doesn't wobble as much on retrieve. I'm thinking PE6 will be enough and it would be good if it could spool 350-400

I'm thinking some kind of Jigging stick will be the rod but I'll worry about that later...

My thinking in order of preference at the moment is:

Shimano Talica 10 single or 12 two speed, Fin-Nor Marquesa 16, Diawa LD40H single or 2 speed

Now my biggest difficulty is do I go for a larger version 2 speed to get more a versatile reel and put up with a 650 gm reel or just go for the smaller lighter single speed and call it for a max 150-200m depth outfit.

So my question is: Other than the slight weight difference, the slight extra expence and the slighly more complex build, is there any reason as far as using a reel goes that a 2 speed is a disadvantage over the single speed version?

Has anyone used both a single speed and two speed Talica of the same size? Is the 2 speed as good?

I know the Diawa 2 speed doesn't have an AR bearing so might have a slight amount more slop

Talica 12 2 speed

Mon, 2018-03-05 22:15

Many moons ago I made the switch from my trusty old TLD 25 to a Talica 12 2 speed. All I can say is that they’re chalk and cheese the Tld is still my go to trolling reel and there’s no way in hell I’d ever bottom bounce with it again . Big chunky and clunky yet a good entry level reel. The Talica is a weapon on a demonblood rod . Shame I only fish ( most of the time ) in water no deeper than 13m these days ...:)

I agree with dodgy, low speed

Tue, 2018-03-06 06:26

I agree with dodgy, low speed is so low you will never use it.

I use a single speed 12 and love it.

For some reason the handle on the 2 speed is shorter, the longer handle on the single speed seems to give you a bit more "cranking power".

Fin Nor Marquesa ++++

Tue, 2018-03-06 07:40

I was reconmended the Fin Nor by a co-worker about five years saying how they won reel of the year multiple times blah blah. Anyways I brought one and I couldnt be happier with it. Im really bad at looking after gear, never wash them sevice them and this thing has rattle around my boat and back of the ute for 5 years and is still like new. Super smooth, hasnt missed a beat. Without sounding like a dick but  its also pulled some solid fish in no dramas at all!

Im currently runnning the MA25 but as soon as I become more flush for cash ill be getting another MA12 for the shallows.

I'm with Ace on this one.

I'm with Ace on this one. Talica 12 single speed with a live Fibre venom rod. Absolute weapon of an outfit. Fish anything from 30m to 300m and will stop anything other than BIG sharks.

Cant go wrong with this outfit. Light and powerful.

Thanks for the info lads. I'm probably leaning towards a Talica. It will be an 8, 10 or 12 but I will head to a tackle shop to have a play with them and make up my mind.

As for Rods, the Venom sounds nice but a little bit pricey so I'll look at my options.

If you can wait for the Boat

If you can wait for the Boat Show, Tuckeys usually knock a big discount off the Venom Rods. that's where I bought both of mine.

I have a FinNor Marquesa 30

Wed, 2018-03-07 10:22

beautiful little reel, only used for trolling. Has scored a few smallish marlin and some sails. Delight to use. using it alongside a TLD20, just no comparison.

Have you thought about going for a larger spinning reel for the deeper bottom bashing? it might seem counter-intuitive, but some blokes I know were up at Nongaloo same time as me last year, mostly bottom bashing, and typically around 150m. They reckoned the best reel for the job was one of the big Fin Nor Offshore spin reels. excellent retrieve rate, built kike a tank, cheap as chips. They were hooking up to sharks a bit, and stuffed their electric reel, but the big Fin Nor's just kept getting the job done. Something to think about. I know that if I ever lost my Stella 18000SW, no way would I buy another. it would be one of those, at a fraction of the price.  One of my sons has a Talica 8, I certainly would only use it for shallow water or light trolling.

 Yes I have actually, someone

Wed, 2018-03-07 11:06

Yes I have actually, someone suggested it yesterday. (Saltiga 5000 was suggested) I really think I like the ability to free spool with the thumb rather than the bail arm and the infinate quick thumb adjustment of drag along with the known preset strike drag position.

Had a look and feel of 8,

Wed, 2018-03-07 14:48

Had a look and feel of 8, 10and 12 Talica today. I had read that the 10 is a wider spool and today I confirmed. The 8 and 12 are a narrower spool than the 10 which is about 10mm wider. I wonder why they have done that and how much difference it makes. I think I like the weight versus line capacity of the 10 best...

I think you will find that 8 and 10 are exactly the same reels other than the 10 having a slightly wider spool.   Similarly the 12 and the 16 are identical other than the 16 having the wider spool.  That way Shimano are simply offering narrow and wider spool options of the same reels.

 Makes sense, manufacturing

Wed, 2018-03-07 19:10

Makes sense, manufacturing costs would be down with mostly interchangable parts. I wonder if you'd really notice much difference in the handling of the 8 and 10, or 12 and 16...

My preference right now is the 10, I'd like to be using braid of around 65-70 Lb breaking strain so thinking a good quality PE5

 OK, I have a reel. I ended

Sun, 2018-03-18 09:27

OK, I have a reel. I ended up with a Diawa LD40H. This came recomended by a couple of friends using it and I got it second hand, near new for quite a bit less than half the new price and it is spooled with Diawa boat braid 50Lb. I might respool it with a slightly heavier braid.

Now a Rod.

I'm just about commited to grabbing a Jigstar Ninga and am thinking the ML.

NINJA L rod: PE2-5, Jig range 100-300g, rod weight 260g

NINJA ML rod: PE3-6, Jig range 150-400g, rod weight 290g

My thoughts are that I'm reasonably inexperienced both skipper and fisher. I'm finding when I try jigging that conditions, drift and my ability to put the boat right on fish targets has me reverting back to sinkers and bait. So I think it would be better to go for the ML rather than the L so I can still fish it with large sinkers and hold bottom.

Anyone else using these? The owner Chris Wong seems to have legend status in Kiwiland...

My problem is Oceanside have these at 30% off for the remainer of today so not much time to decide...

I went for the ML 3-6.I't's

Mon, 2018-03-19 08:26

I went for the ML 3-6.

I't's quite heavy but decided I will probably be using it with bait a lot and wanted to be able to fish it with heavy lead.

Awsome , thats what i'm considering , a multi purpose rod not to heavy for jigs but not too light for bottom fishing with lead. When you christen it let us know how it felt. Cheers Paul

 Likewise mate!

I have foot surgery on Thursday. This will put me out of action for a few weeks. Hopefully the weather will be better by the time I'm ready to go again!
