New to Perth - No Fish

Moved to Perth about 18 months ago, recently decided to take up surf fishing as a hobby. After 6 weeks and several hundred dollars iam still awaiting that first Tailor. Currently living in Perth's Northern suburbs been trying all the local spots. Mindarie, Burns beach, Quinns ect....... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 For me sunrise or sunset.

Sun, 2013-02-24 14:12

For me sunrise or sunset. But saying that I've caught them mid morning from a passing school. Depending on the wind I will baitcast mulies with a small running sinker down to the hooks on the leader. This is good fopr casting as well as getting the bait just under the surface. But be patient the more work you put in you get rewarded. I fished two weeks ago for nil where as the week before they were jumping out of the water at the same spot. Look for gullys close to shore as well. A good pair of Polaroids will sort this. Fish love to swim the channels. goodluck.

Thanks for the reply mate, I have been casting mulies with a star sinker with no success. I will try your method all i seem to be pulling up is sea weed. Putting more fish in the sea then im taking out. Gonna try again this evening, any good spots where the fish are biting at the moment?

Cheers.

 Any where the weed isn't.

Any where the weed isn't. The spots you mention all sound good. You should give the beach at Guilderton a go.

Hey bud, took me awhile to

Sun, 2013-02-24 15:43

Hey bud welcome to the site, took me awhile to get into the tailor and all that in Perth, given that I've only fished here since the end of 2011 and have found that my best efforts have come at night. I've also had success early morning as well.  A good idea I reckon is to scope out your intended fishing spots before hand to get an idea where any gutters/reefs etc are and to see how it behaves. A simple reccy mission yesterday arvo told me that the beach of choice for me would've been a chore as there was a fair bit of weed in the water and the swell made it a tad tricky so I saved myself some grief. Google maps/earth is also your friend in this as well.

Given that lure fishing seems to hate me, I keep it simple by fishing generally with a running star sinker on 20lb mono attached to 30lb fluorocarbon leader and a set of 4/0 gangs for mulies or poddy mullet (is better as it stays on longer i reckon). This for me is adequate as it can contend with bigger stuff if necessary. Good thing is if your partial to a bit of arm stretching you can pick up a few rays here and there and may even get lucky, like myself and land a few mulloway though mostly around school size.

The thing is like sea-kem mentioned that the fish can be there one day, gone the next. The last two weeks have produced a solitary dart and some weed so basically, patience is the key and the further north you head the better I reckon. Given I fish around your area, your more than welcome to tag along one night if you want.

Try as Sea-Kem

Says with a small running ball sinker at most, i have only fished for taylor with gangs and bait, there a surface fish so you will have more luck sticking to a cast and retrieve method keeping your bait close to the surface, always be set up an hour before sundown / sunrise, and i find the small glow sticks good at night sitting at the start of your trace / leader.

Keep an eye on the friday paper report as its a start on some locations for the weekend!
