new ovehead reel

Hi guys seeing how some piece of @%$# stole some of my gear I'm on the hunt for a new overhead beach reel. I was using a torium 30 before. Just wondering if you guys are using anything different other than the saltists and the toriums any input would be greatly appreciated thanks guys

More expensive by a bit, but lever drag, really tough, smooth and light.

heap of line capacity for the size too.

 Penn fathoms in the star

Penn fathoms in the star drag. Retail for around the $200 mark. One of the best casting reels ive used. Theres a huge review on them somewhere on the net somewhere. They have a sophisticated spring action centrifugal break. Leverdrags are no good for casting. I sold a saltist bg to buy the fathom.

I've got the saltist (BG 50 2

I've got the saltist (BG 50 2 x SLOSH) and penn (545 and 525).

Tried the Avet raptor this weekend with an assassin 2-3 oz rod, and 75 gram spoon, got to say I was impressed, that reel cast a dream, and it has plenty of drag if required. down side is the small spool, it only holds about 300m braid and 120 of top shot.

The AVet has  a 6:1 retieve, and the mag cast control

I use a range of overheads

Mon, 2014-02-03 19:19

I use a range of overheads from size 20 though to size 50 from the shore.  Always on the lookout for new and improved....

So if I was to upgrade/replace a reel I would go with something no bigger than the Shimano 20 or Daiwa 40 or Penn 30 size for fishing anywhere on our WA coast.  Only reason to go bigger is if you want to pull sharks.

Really happy with my Daiwa Saltist 20 and Penn 545GS.  But you can go lighter if casting and it is important to be a quick reel.  Whatever you get, remember to do 200 to 300 m of braid and then topshot it with 150 to 200m of your nylon for the cast.

So for me the choice is one of Daiwa Saltist BG35 or BG40, Penn 25N or 30; Shimano torium 16 or 20.  If you have lashings of cash and appreciate fine machinary try the Daiwa Saltiga or Shimano Trinidad in similar sizes.  They are nice, but the over-engineering is not necessary.

The specifications on the Fathom 25N or 30 size are really interesting.  I suspect that if you are a competant caster this reel will help get additional distance.

Hi lbg the torium was mainly for chasing sharks got to a point where I could throw 8 oz around the 100 mark probably not great compared to some guys but was doing OK was looking at the fathom 50 or saltist and would like to have a look at the new Seagate as well. Also have to find another rod to suit. Does anybody know anywhere local that stock Loomis and franklin rods?

Should have a look at the assassin rods , the tackle shack is stocking them and have a few models to suit the budget .

With the reels I have a range of shimano and daiwa overheads , bought a finnor ofc 30 h to try two yrs ago and can't knock it , super smooth cast and great pulling power , I prefer it over the torium .

OH

Got my first OH reel before xmas - Trinidad 30A, great feel, light and lovely line capacity - 600m of 50lb powerpro + 60lb leader. Powerpro is a fairly bulky so if I ever need more capacity for ballooning miles out I could step up to a better braid.

Will do for beach casting, ballooning, trolling, bottom bashing pretty much everything, i just need to wean myself off the spin reels.
