Is this about the top 10m to hang vertically rule? I'm thinking about using line clips like we used to use on the tuna boats with a short bit of chain hanging off. should be a cheap and easily adjustable solution but as mentioned above won't help that sinking feeling if someone chops the floats....
For cray ropes . 4 to 5 m down rope have a stopper ( big splice or knot ) I had pro boats amature boats all hit my floats last year and year before that. Never lost a pot. It's almost impossible to get cut by prop or rope cutters on pro boats. Can have long ropes for swells and seas. But your rope from floats straight up and down ( impossible to get rapped in prop) if by very slim chance it does rope sinks leads slide off. Up pops your rope. I don't think it will save whales but safety factor is unreal. That many times you see floats you turn boat to miss and find out they have 20 to 30 meters of rope on top . And they wonder why they lost there pots ( really). Doing it with leads you can have longer ropes . If you have winch grab float hand pull in rope to lead , then rap around winch done. It's like a running sinker they slide off easy in case of floats go missing. Ropes are pain in ass . Great idea safety factor. Make sure your lead hole is 5 mm bigger than rope your using . Easy /simple/ brilliant idea
Done it drive your boat at any speed at your floats see what happens. It will push floats away to side of boat away from prop, rope straight up and down goes with floats. You won't loose pots if you do it right . Best rule ever from fisheries ( safer boating in silly season)
You can buy lead-cored rope, this is what is used by most pros to comply, has been a requirement for them for some years now. Sure, you can hang rusty old spanners, snapper leads, etc off them, PITA to get around the winch. As someone had pointed out earlier, if you don't have rope on the surface in the first place, you have very little chance of being cut off. Get a price on a coil from someone like Taylors, then buy it as a group buy, or just buy it yourself and flog it off in 3 metre lengths on here or FB at a profit -- a 220 metre coil will go a very long way.
I used some old valve springs I had lying around from an engine rebuild. The rope fits perfectly through the middle of the spring. I slid them about 4 meters down the rope and then gaffa taped them in place.
I don't have a winch, but they are probably small enough and low profile enough to go around a capstan style winch.
Crackpots in O Connor sell 1.5m lengths of lead core rope, around 12mm. Splice that into main pot rope around 8-10m down should do the trick. Will go through winch easy as.

Another option
Diamond network in O’Connor have whale bone lead weights 150gm that slide down over your
rope to a knot at desired length. I run these through my winch no problem, you need three for each pot line.
