Very strong motor & like to run hard .

Certainly very lucky to be given a boat, your old man sounds like a decent fella. A boat of that size and age normally hold their value fairly well and if only keeping a few years will probably not loose half. There is no way in history a 30 yam will gum up after a few minutes at idle unless you are running a ridiculous amount of oil, a 30 yam is as basic as basic can be when it comes to motors. A 30 yam should be fairly bullet proof if it has been looked after, make sure you give the engine a good service by a qualified mechanic if your not that way inclined, it will be money well spent as replacing leg oil, water impellor and the rest should give you some confidence in the motor to run pretty decent until the next service.

great motor very reliable and plenty of grunt for that hull

the only very small issue with the idle at low revs is that they can be slow to jump out of the hole when you flatten the revs to get going quick , they have a small flat spot that can see them take a few extra seconds to get up and go

but saying that , its not really an issue unless your needing quick accelaration away from surf breaks or swell when pulling pots , etc , in the usual operations it wont be a factor imo

I bought a Yammy CV30 in 2001, sold the boat in 2009. Was a great motor, had absolutely Zero issues with it. If I wa in the market for a similar motor I would buy another in a heartbeat. I don't know if anything has changed in the models since, but the fuel required on mine was 100:1 pre mix, that's not going to oil up any plugs.

 Hey mate, i have a cv30, they are a very agricultural engine ( think landcruiser 70 series) but go forever, the gumming up of plugs you are talking about is as mentioned above, when let idle for a while they do tend to oil up a little, these engines are pretty much a zero to go engine, i personally idle for up to around 5 min but before i go to take i will give ita little squirt, back it off then go flat stick, otherwise can be a bit sluggish till the excess oil has burnt off

 thanks for all the info guys i had read mixed reveiws but everyone here sounds very positive.  I got abit worried as it had brand new plugs in it but he had told my dad it hadnt been serviced since last year. I also think some of the reviews could have been from other countries, not sure. Motor started for me second pull and i didn't use the choke as it had been started the day before and i wanted to test it and see. Have read the same about it taking a second or two to get going if flattened off the mark. Can't wait will get the cray pots back in on the weekend if not before i will give it afew sea trials and decide about a service but i will get a service and impeller done in the next few months if not straight away.  sorry by the way i have a 8 month old yamaha 15hp in the buy/sell sect and will also be putting a 12 foot savage with 6hp and licensed trailer on Gumtree if anyone is interested. 

 My Yammy CV 30 is still quite new with only about 30 hours on it, this motor does not oil. A quick blast on the throttle if it stutters a tad on a long idle sorts it pretty quick and the motor pushes my dinghy up over 30kmh. 

 Ive had one on a 420 quintrex busta since 2014, now has somewhere between 1200-1500 hrs on it and other than a couple of services ive never had to spend a dollar on it. 

Personally i run mine at 75-1 for usual work and 50-1 for reef trips (80 odd km runs) as i believe 100-1 isnt enough when operating mostly in the higher rev range. 

You will notice that itll cough and splatter a bit if you spend a good bit of time trolling or drifting, little annoying but if you give it a bit of a rev out of gear itll clean up pretty quickly. 

 took the boat out yesterday arvo motor went great, it is abit rough at idle speed pretty terrible really but increase the revs abit and it is way better. My son had a hard time driving it but only because of the speed we were trying to do in the marina and we had no weight at the front of the boat. Goes fantastic at full revs.
