Need help
Ok,
For all you more experienced people... What I am wanting to know is what the difference is between a Overhead rod and a spinning rod, and further to that how much of a difference it makes putting the other style reels on them.
Example: I have a saltiga gt 86/ 8'6" /100 - 180g /max line pe 8g sitting at home, next to it I have a Jigwrex (shimano jig rod - also spin setup). These were purchased before my eyes were opened to the wonders of the mighty jigging master overheads. This overhead then made me think would I be better buying and learning to cast with a overhead. Now I am sitting here wondering if I have wasted my money on the jigwerx and the GT popper (neither have ever even been used) or if they could be used with overhead reels.
With the Jigwerx I have made my mind up and I am going to buy a three kings light rod made by jigging master (I hear I will not be let down) this is on order already and I cant wait for it to arrive in January some time.
The saltiga I am loath to give up on.
So questions I need answers to are:
1) What is the difference between the rods?
2) How much does it affect spinning rods to be used with overhead reels?
3) Given the cash I have sitting around in gear that isnt used would I be better off just buying a spinner - or are overheads that much better - or will a overhead work with the saltiga GT?
4) What would be the best overhead for aussie salmon in the south west off the rocks and GT and bigger fish out of Exmouth and the AB Islands?
5) Given the above overhead reel what would be the best surf/rock casting rod to go with it - will mainly be fishing for salmon in the SW?
For now forget the budget - ofcourse one exists but Im not sure how big it is yet - probably purchase one item at a time.

Ray - with the overheads,
Ray - with the overheads, there is a learning curve. Start with a spin setup. What reels do you have ATM? Come out with a fish with Till and me and you can try out a few outfits.

for me personally
I like jigging with a spinning rod. But I must say I jigged with my accurate last trip out and that was OK.......
Go with Alfred or even say Shikari and try a range of gear before you commit any more money to gear that you may not like or feel comfortable using.
For surf work, a spinning rod is about 1000x easier to learn with. You'll have no fun with an overhead unless you can cast them proficientally, and there is an art to it.

Current gear
okuma 30 size spinning aevon (something like that) on a livefibre 8' rod.
Luvias 2000 on a 4' whiting rod.
Okuma Overhead on a 6' boat rod silstar.
Pen Int on another 6' silstar boat rod.
Jigging master PE4 on nothing.
jigwrex with nothing on it.
Saltiga with nothing on it.
Where are you and Till based? I am in Busso but I travel a fair amount.
I have been fishing my whole life - Grew up the son of a crayfisherman, started as a deckie when I left school - caught all sorts of fish (wetlining) and only ever used a handline.
Spinning is all well and good but if I dont start on casting overheads a little more at some point then I will never start. the JM gear bought it home to the point that I sold my stella for it.
Original Idea was stella 20000k would go onto either rod.

Overhead rods and Spin rods!
Overhead rods: Need more guides to support the line and therefore stopping the line touching the blank when it is loaded up. The guides on an overhead are built ontop of the backbone of the blank aswell.
Spin Rods: Less guides than an overhead, and have the guides on the opposite side of the backbone of the rod.
Overhead reels are not good for spin rods and vis versa. Bending the backbone of the rod the opposite way its meant to go is not good and will weaken the blank dramatically.
Personally i feel more comfortable jigging with o/heads in the heavier stuff (PE4 ++) and spin for the lighter stuff (PE2-3)
But yeh as the other boys have said, definately have a play/test with some gear and see what you prefer.
Cheers,
Sam

Ah! you are a tad far
Ah! you are a tad far away! The Stella 20k is a top notch reel. You will need spin reels for spin rods and overhead reels for overhead rods.
I am NOR in Joondalup, next to Deco.

Dont make many
Between work (I have been home 4 days in the last 10 weeks) and being down south I dont make many of the WAD parties.
Have my own down south when I am home that include mick, drew lots of cartons of carona and barbied fish and crays tho :P They are the best parties if you ask me. Though Mick normally has to provide the crays LOL
