Glad to see I'm not the only person that found the Navman GPS rubbish.  I've got a Humminbird 587 combo that I really like.  I'm with Jayce on the screen size but the jump in price can be a bit of a put off.

I have a Lowrance HDS7 and am considering upgrading to the new HDS Gen2 touch. I really like the navionics charts and the HDS is simple to use.

The hds units are easy to use and good as GPS. I had a 7 combo on the tinny and have a 10 (GPS only) on my new boat.

I had an iPad with the Navionics app (with upgraded sonar chart package installed) with us last weekend at abrolhos islands and it was so good as a GPS plotter I used the simrad nss7 only as a sounder. The bottom details on the Navionics charts were in a different league!

Yep I have the HDS9 gen2 it's an awesome GPS easy to use, I've easily taught my 13yr old son how to use it. Saying that he's almost more tech savvy than me

If you have the room and dollars I would try and stretch to a hds 8 - the extra soft keys at the bottom make life a lot easier

Good Nav card is the key,I do a lot of trips to Rotto Navionics Gold is what I have and that shows all the bays markers and they are pretty spot on .HDS10 because i like the bigger screen. All boats have a display where you can have a play with some of the units I would assume Chivers would also for SOR. Also things to take into consideration and remember is most of these units are part of a hole system for your boat they dont mix and match,Lowrance only go with Lowrance, furuno only with furuno etc, etc.
Buy a unit that you can add to and make it part of a hole system for your boat also take into consideration is your boat are you going to upgrade it ?
If so dont put a through hull transducer in or if you are going to keep it in hull/through hull is the go.
