Navionics app

After some good advise from people on fishwrecked I downloaded navionics onto my iPhone 5 and used it on the weekend I was very impressed. Now iam thinking of buying a tablet to use it just want to no does the tablet need to have gps and I have a wifi iPad would that work out at sea. Also I see on android there are 2 versions the one for tablets is $50 is it any better cheers

I have just bought a Samsung galaxy S3 tablet for the same reason. $200 at the moment.
Yes the wifi ipad will work, it runs off the GPS not the wifi. Most tablets have GPS included with them, sometimes they don't state it though. As long as you don't buy a real cheap one ie pendo pad, you should be good. I've also read there is a really cheap $98 tablet called a amicroe that you can get, has decent reviews for its price. Only problem being is waterproof casing and accessories might be harder to get for the cheaper tablets.
As far as the different versions I'm not too sure one says it's HD.

Screen Resolution on most
Screen Resolution on most tablets are superior to most mobile phones so the HD version of navionics apps should display better on tablets than on phones.

I use my ipad with navionics
I use my ipad with navionics all the time!! It has an inbuilt gps..
If you have wifi, just turn on the bluetooth on your phone, and hotspot it to the ipad for internet!
Ipad navionics is around $40

I have a Wireless iPad
I have a Wireless iPad running C-Map (Plan2Nav) and it wont work away from wireless. Even when connecting it to my my iphone, i can surf the net to my hearts content, but Plan2nav wont work.
Utterly useless on the boat, but good for a zoom around at home looking for waypoints.

I have been using the
I have been using the Navionics on my Samsung tablet 2 for a couple of years now, just as long as you remember to charge it the night before no worries, and I usually get 2 days fishing out of one charge. Navionics also has a large speed display in the top corner which is handy, as the analougue speedo on the boat isnt really that accurate at slow speeds. Works well in the cuddy cab as well as it doesnt get direct sunlight usually, but the 10 inch screen is really good! Now I just need to find a good mount for the dash...

So with your samsung you are running on android is that the hd version of the app or just the $17 one

A 7inch samsung galaxy
A 7inch samsung galaxy tablet will work with the $17 version but you will need the HD version for the larger tablet. This is because I think the app still thinks its a phone rather than a tablet.

Battery Drain on iPad
I use my iPad a fair bit as an addition to the Lowrance 7 HDS Gen 2 but I soon found that if I used the tracking feature of Navionics the battery drain on the iPad occured very quickly. I used to end up shutting down the iPad as the battery was drained within 6 hours (if I remember correctly). Now I just use it as a chart, very little drain on the battery.

I notice I can get down to
I notice I can get down to the smallest scale of 5m on my lowrance plotter, have started using the navionics maps of late, although I notice I can only get down to the smallest scale if 51m or 67m.
does anyone else have the same scale?
