My first Sambo!
Went and saw brenz at Tackleworld to spend my Calamari Classic winnings, a $50 voucher, picked up an 8ft Shimano Catana 2-4kg for $70 with chasing salmon in mind. Yesterday i chucked my Daiwa Eclipz on the Catana and took the ski out with a mate to chase some squid in the sound. The squidding was slow, 5 in about 45 mins. After catching a few KG Whiting using some tentacles, which my mate had to bite off because we forgot the knife haha, decided to trolll some plastics around the southern point of GI. We threw out the plastics as we went under the causeway and after 20secs it got taken by a herring then it spat the hooks so i started reeling the SP in just to keep it moving when it got slammed by something with alot more grunt! It hit like a tailor but was running for cover deep like a skippy, but when i saw the brown/gold tinge of the fish coming up from the bottom i thought it might be some kind of cod! Didnt realise what it actually was until i had the fish about a meter from the ski, an awesome looking 35cm juvi sambo! Even though it is tiny compared to what alot of you other members catch, im still going to claim at is a sambo off the ski! Cant beieve how hard it went for its size, alot harder than any salmon ive caught at that size!
I was buzzing for about 10mins after, and i just kept telling my mate i couldnt believe it haha. I would love to get onto a school of smaller fish around the 1-4kg mark, does anybody know any inshore spots or are they not that common?? I think i read a comment from Aussie Breamer that he caught some rats aswell as 1kg skippy around stragglers and mew?

Burley up around the reefs
Burley up around the reefs and they should come. I've had 15kg plus ones chase my tailor in at mewstone on more than one occasion. Also you can get the rats in the river around the moorings etc, not sure when. Think early summer??

We hit a big school of juvi
We hit a big school of juvi sambos in shallower water at the back of Rotto last week....excellent fun on 8lb bream gear, with a 4 way hookup at one point!!!! And yep, they go very hard for their size.....big ones are freight trains.
Just need tlo be careful, as they seem quite fragile compared with the bigger ones, so handle with care prior to release.
Boston Whaler 235 Conquest......getting the flogging it was built for.

fun! Was fun on the sambo on
fun! Was fun on the sambo on 8lb, would be good for flicking lures/plastics at tailor, skippy, and salmon. 8' is a bit long for the ski but i just wanted to try it out. Also caught the whiting on it and there was no trouble feeling the bites from them and the tiny butter fish. Long butt, good for whipping out metals.

G'day Beau, I've hooked but
G'day Beau, I've hooked but not boated a Sambo from the reef just out from Scarborough.
It took a big Squidgy SP I had rigged up as a predator fish/squid combo as I looped some squid barbs into the end of it whilst I had a sandy for lunch and had it sitting in a rod holder. Maybe if I was holding it I may have been a chance!
Another time we were getting a feed of herring from Little Rock at Hillary's after a slow day outer wide. From all the action of herring being burleyed up a Sambo of approx 15kg showed up. I quickly rigged up a live bait from the next herring we caught and waited no longer than 30 secs to sight the little beast smash it in crystal clear water of no more than 3m deep being low tide.
It didnt last long before I was busted off but it goes to prove it's not just the rats that will come into the shallows chasing dinner!
