multi use rods

Hi Guys,

I am in the process in buying a new reel. I am deciding between the new Daiwa Certate 3000 or the Catalina 3500, or other suggestions are welcome. I wish to run PE2 / 20lb. I will then need to match it too a new rod. I would like to only have to buy 1. I would like to use it from my dinghy around the reefs at coral bay / exmouth throwing hard bodies lures, soft plastics , poppers for spangled emperior etc and hoping to be able to use it landbased as well for soft plastics. Is this possible. If so does anyone have any rod suggestions.

Rod Suggestion

Wed, 2013-02-27 13:02

Hey Josh,

I own one and would highly recommend a Shimano Terez 15-30lb 7'2" rod.  Light, powerful, great action and IMO ticks all the boxes for what you want to do with it.

Def worth considering.

Cheers

 Terez have very bad blank

Terez have very bad blank quality... not worth the money you pay for them. Good components but crap blank. In saying that, I am going to buy one soon just because of the cheap price.

Bad Blank?

Wed, 2013-02-27 13:13

Why do you say that?

Have landed some solid fish on mine and thought it handled it well.  The only thing I have noticed is that being white in colour, it has yellowed slightly.

Got the same rod. Turned

Got the same rod. Turned slightly red. It'll always carry a bit of port hedland :)

I reckon it's a great rod for the slighly heavier soft plastic work. Has quite a light tip but can handle a lot of pressure. Also looks good with a stradic FJ on it!

The only thing I dislike is the reel seat. Those little holes have already cut into my finger when striking.

For a little more you can also get a t-curve saltwater spin 5-10kg. Matched with a 5000 stradic, it can do some serious damage.

I also own this same rod. A very stiff rod to use, hard on the shoulders if you are casting all day. Very good rod though, casts a mile and handles the fish well.

Shimano reel

Wed, 2013-02-27 13:40

I use a 5000 size Shimano reel on my Terez.  Line class from 12 - 30 lb.

I think the Diawa reels are slightly bigger so take your reel and try it on one the feel what the balance it like.

5000 sustain on mine, looks good with the black reel on the white rod too. Seems to be a good match that size.

I use a nitro Magnum butt

Wed, 2013-02-27 14:20

I use a nitro Magnum butt 4-6kg that is also 7"2. I use it for all my lure flicking around the reefs in Perth for tailor, salmon and ytk. I also use it for snapper with plastics. Might be a little bit light for what your after in Exmouth though?

You should be able to get a good price on the current model stella as the new ones are coming at the end if the year. There are a few rods out there, just look for something around 7 foot 5-10kg. Theres some new saltigas out if it fits your budget. Otherwise the catalina rods themselves. I dont personally like the terez, too soft in the tip.

Cheers,

Do you think i am looking at the right reels, or is there something else out there. Stella or Saltiga are out of the price range unfortunatly.

Ive heard of a stella 5000

Wed, 2013-02-27 15:20

Ive heard of a stella 5000 new for $650? I thought the catalina was around $700? Otherwise nothing wrong with the reel. Only thing is the stella is a high gear but it only retrieves 105 cm/crank. Look for a lower gear for placies but if your considering popping id go high gear and deal with it for placies. Depends on how much popping/metals you wanna do.

Have a look at the Diawa

Have a look at the Diawa Saltist 4500, might be more suited to 30lb braid tho

Have a few Terez and I don't rate them, or the Fin Nor.

Look for a 7'2" - 8' T-Curve should cover almost anything you want to do with it!

+ 1 for the 15 - 30 Terez.

+ 1 for the 15 - 30 Terez. Fantastic rods. I reckon anyone who says they are crap must have something against shimano because IMO they are a quality rod.

luv nitros

Wed, 2013-02-27 22:05

Im with beau, luv my nitro magnum butt, however it is a bit light for what you want. When i head north i take the viper, perfect for what you are describing. Match it to a good 3000 reel like a freams and its bulletproof..... you can up your line to 30lb shinobi braid and still get over 200mtrs on a spool. (I have never had a wind knot since changing to this line on both the mag butt and the viper) With the money ya save on the reel you could even look at the samurai reaction rods, a few more bucks than the nitros but they run fugi titanium sic guides and are a pleasure to fish with.

Good luck cobber, ive spent the last 12 months buying, selling and trading trying to find the perfect all round rod/reel outfit. Ive learnt that there is always a trade off/compramise you have to make. You are better off setting it up for what you are going to use it for the most and if you can use it for anything else then you are ahead.

I have been running a t-curve kingmack up in exmouth, quite like it, good for off the back, used it on the boat in 10m for spangos and in 100m for some reds. hard work in a 100m but never let me down.

Cheers Joel
