Moving to Exmouth
Submitted by RumPig on Mon, 2022-07-25 10:55
G'day all,
New to the forum, thought I'd get involved, I am moving up to Exmouth in January and obviously know the fishing is pretty different to what I am used to catching on the NSW southern coast.
I have a 4.9m open boat and a bit of gear. Just wondering if anybody has any specific gear recommendations and could point me to the right spot for some info on what I am likely to encounter land based and boat based. I have a fair idea after trolling Google and the forum. Just wanting to get experienced perspectives.
cheers

Don't you have to catch other fish for the sharks to be a problem?? Knowing my luck I wont even have the pleasure of a Noah.

Yep
Have caught makos up as far as Bedout Island north of Hedland. One of the more frequent ones caught from the beach are lemon sharks, Hammers and shovelnose

.
We caught a pair of the biggest makos in about 15 meters of water outside 80 mile beach.
Bigger than any we'd caught while fishing for swords
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Pair
Strangel, but we also got a pair of them, both around 50- 60kg and about 50 hooks apart on that hilly bottom NE of Bedout Island

Hey mate, welcome to the
Hey mate, welcome to the site, Exmouth's is quite literally a different scenery to that of the south coast of NSW, my brothers in Batemans Bay.
You seem to have a decent enough boat to travel the coast and beach launching will add an extra dimension to getting out and exploring all around Exmouth.
Budget and your preferred fishing style will dictate your gear.
Drop me a pm if u want with what type of fishing you prefer and I will help as best I can, I also make lures and should have a couple of spare stickbaits ready for some action in a months time that you can try for free.
Cheers

Exmouth has just about every
Exmouth has just about every kind of fishing there is so it really depends what you like to do. If you want to chase demersals for a feed there is that. If you want to fly fish for bonefish and queenies there's that. If you want to troll for marlin there's that too. So the answer probably needs a bit more info to address properly. Bottom line is there is a lot of bloody good options!

Wait until you get there.
Your boat will give you plenty of access to fish when the weather allows it.
I wouldn't worry too much about buying stuff before you go there.
Wait and see what type of fishing you'll end up doing then buy the gear to suit.
There are 2 well stocked tackle stores in town but as you can expect the prices match the location.
Online stores will be able to deliver other items you want.
Having said that.....
A light weight overhead PE 2-4 outfit will get plenty of use.
Something that can troll a Halco 190 for Mackies is always fun. 10-15kg spin rod with an 8000 size reel.
8 Foot 8-10kg casting rod for tossing lures for tuna or spanglies on the flats might also be an option.

Outfit for Exmouth
If I had to have one outfit for Exmouth, it would be a 6'6" to 7' rod, PE3-4 range, with a good 6000-8000 size reel. Perfect for casting stickbaits around the inshore areas, can troll for light tackle species like tuna and dollies, and would even do OK as a bottom fishing setup in a pinch.

Watching Youngbloods will
Watching Youngbloods will give you a bit of an idea of what you could see and do up there if you had the time and the ability to do the miles.
I recently did a report of our trip up at Ningaloo Station and two years back did a report on Giralia Station and as a person who puts in a bit of time and effort, we lost fish to sharks like the pro's but also got a feed.
It is an awesome place to base yourself

move there - probably a
move there - probably a dream of most blokes on the forum for fishing, the above shark remarks are a bit of a pisstake, catch - if u get sharked move
as for cost of living ...
get there suz it out - above advice is sound
4.9 boat for me would be on the small size to get out behind the reef going to the islands and catch rubies etc , except on good weather , but you have the whole gulf side and inside reef areas to throw plastics etc. at coral trout and various other species
Town ramp Bundegi or Tantabiddi is where you would probably be launching, there is good fishing around for anyone that can read a sounder - watch for sanctuary zones
Tantabiddi is quite a drive - but worth it - weather as everywhere is always an issue
dont be scared to drive north and launch from the other side of the gulf

My best mate built a holiday house there and has basically moved there (don't tell his wife!). Spends his time surfing and fishing with a little bit of works at times. Now that's livin' Barry!

Timely Thread!
Hey RumPig. I am also moving up to Exmouth from Mandurah at the end of next month with a similar set-up to you by the sounds. Have spent a bit of time up there fishing the west side from Tantabiddi but certainly keen to explore the Gulf.
Might see you up there next year!!
