Monofilament line, does anyone out there use it

Hey guys, just wondering if anybody still uses mono on the reels? If so what do you use it for? I.e. I have an everol 30/50 waterproof with 800 metres of 37 kilo berkley trilene gold that I use for the really big fish and ballooning. The line is almost 10 years old and has never let me down. Just keen to know who uses what and for what purpose.

Ive got mono for trolling

Fri, 2009-09-11 21:14

Ive got mono for trolling and heavy rock fishing. Some older reels I have only run mono as they dont handle braid well. All my Penn Spinfishers run mono, cos of the above reason as well as its only used for rock/beach fishing. They use either Platypus Pretest or Berkley Big Game from 8kg to 15kg.

My only trolling reel, Daiwa SLD 30 runs 15kg Stren Gold.

I only use monofilament on

I only use monofilament on one outift and that's for trolling for billies off Dampier... apart from that I use braid on everything. I HATE using stretchy line AKA mono.

Only for trolling on the big gear or a bit for backing before I put the braid on on the trolling gear generally change it every 18 months or so

i use mono for most fishing situations mate

Sat, 2009-09-12 00:12

i used ten kilo platypus pre test mono for snapper mulloway and anything else around the same size and i use 15kg and 24 kg platypus mono for balloonin and trolling and bottom bashing - ive never had a problem i find the strech lands and hooks more fish when fishing with bait - ive landed some pretty cool things in suprising time using ten kilo mono like 100kg plus sting rays in under half an hourand massive shovelnose sharks  -  just constant pressure and they come up - people wingge about bein busted by sting rays because there not tryin hard enough were was i ......."oh yer mono over braid" ........i reckon mono is more effective in situations were fishing with bait and trolling - butif ya want to work soft placcies and pop for big trevas then braid would make life easier .

Jesse has been using the old mono handline the last few trips and has been doing well, he is feeling a lot more smaller touches with the handline .We catch bait, herring, whiting on mono 4kg.

Not really what you're

Sun, 2009-09-13 19:33

Not really what you're talking about, but perhaps mono really is better than light braid sometimes.

I have some TD sensor 6lb and some 12lb basshard on a couple of reels and that light stuff its quite hard to knot, a bit prone to wind knots and has zero abrasion resistance.

Of course there are reasons to still love it, it casts a loooooong way and its just super responsive.

Mono!

Sun, 2009-09-13 23:44

Mono still has a place in the market!

I use mono for;

* Cockburn Sound Pink snapper bait fishing (boat & L/B Rocks) - More abrasion resistense & the stretch reduces hook pulling  through violent head-shaking!

* Cockburn Sound mulloway bait fishing (boat) -  the stretch reduces hook pulling  through head-shaking and also when they side swipe your bait resulting in sneeled hooks on the outside of their mouth/easy to spit

* Trolling - More stretch for keeping the hook in especially through jumping and helps compensate for fast running fish as they change direction or come back at ya!

poundage!

Hi Gav, sorry for the delay....been away from the computer lately!

I use 10kg (20lb) mono, my fav is the Berkley Biggame, good abrasion resistence & reliable strength when you turn snapper from the reef!

Yeah i use mono for trolling

Yeah i use mono for trolling as well, the stretch helps to hold hooks in when the sails jump, and when the fish strikes the extra stretch doesnt rip the lure out of their mouth

Mono line

Fri, 2009-09-25 12:15

Mono has its place in trailing and beach have 10 reels set up with line between 4 and 12 kg. The stretch in the line when trailing allows you to make more mistakes when using light line on big fish. When on the beach mono is great when you have fish in the surf with weed about.

Braid is fine for sandy

Fri, 2009-09-25 16:34

Braid is fine for sandy beach, bottom bashing from a boat plus some mono leader

I use mono for rockhoping set and forget rigs from the beach and any fishing near reefs.........u just need to know which are the low strecth monos and the ones to keep away from

maxima is good for alveys=good line lay as its supple and dosent do

shimano technium, is a killer low strecht mono which is use on alot of my setups....a bit pricey but thats life....bcf stock it only unfortunaly,,,,,wot schmucks

anyways braid aint the be all and end all of lines.....it has its short comings....needs to be used on generally better qaulity drags/reels due to start up inertia so u cant fish a really hard drag round big boondies on heavy gear unles u have the qaulity reel, whre as the mono has the abrasion resistance and a bit of strech which is kinder on gear and person

your own trial and error will work the above out,,, happy fishing
