mono to mono knot
Submitted by pembo6 on Mon, 2011-10-17 17:43
Had a quick search but couldn't find much on this.... maybe I'm blind??
After recommendations 4 the best knot to connect 30lb mono mainline to 50-100lb mono leader.
Is it best to have knot before or after guides? Ideally I want a long leader but I expect it won't cast through guides well??
Thanks

Double Unis have always worked for me
when joining mono. The problem is though that any knot which passes through the guides at high speed (surf casting) will be a pain in the butt. I use braid now and have discovered some nice Chinese tension knots but they are difficult and time consuming. With mono gear I prefer to take the main line right to the terminal tackle to avoid the hassles of trying to pass the knot through the guides. Having said all of that though fishing from a boat is a completely different ball game.

The blood knot
always served me well joining the mono shock leader to the mono main line during my surfcasting days. Maybe a bit old school these days?

I mainly fish from a boat using braid, which may not be what you are after. I use to tie a bimini loop in the braid to join the leader onto but it was a lot of hassle. I've started using a polamar knot on the main line straighton to a swivel clip. This then takes whatever terminal tackle i want to use on the day. Quich and easy to tie and quick ti change rigs if i lose all or part of the terminal tackle.

A full blood knot is good for
A full blood knot is good for mono to mono when diameters are about the same: http://www.animatedknots.com/bloodknot/index.php
The albright is good for mono to mono when the diameters are very different as in your case: http://www.animatedknots.com/albright/index.php
Both knots are quick & easy to tie, both pass through the guides pretty well & both retain excellent knot strength when tied correctly.

Use to be a blood knot fan
But nothing blood wise challenges the Uni-Uni. But as mentioned a PITA to cast as it does stick to the guides. From a boat not a worry in the world, and mono to mono its is as strong as any knot, because it self tensions both ways, and doesnt slip.

Tough one Pembo - take it its
Tough one Pembo - take it its your surf rod? - recommendation: buy a rod with bigger eyes?!
The smallest knot I guess, 30lb - 50/b or 60lb leader IMO would be the centauri to centauri - or simply double fig 8 to double fig 8. Small and strong. (BUt seriously, in the long run, if you are going to use big line - change your rod.)

ah - forgot to mention - and
ah - forgot to mention - and my personal fav - wind-on leader - no more issues with guide size, and after a few samples it is not too difficult to make your own windon leaders.

Yep. Its for the surf rod.

Thanks John. I might take your advice and get a rod with larger guides. For now I am going to use a nasty cheap old rod I have which does have reasonably large guides. It is heavy so will handle larger fish/small sharks. Might try the centauri. I find the albright or uni work fine for up to 40lb, But I'm probably going to use much heavier line.
I was down in Dunsborough last weekend & I was busted off by what I think was a small-medium shark. I only had light line but it was great fun (briefly). So now I want to have a go and be more prepared.
Ragbag is going to e-mail me a diagram of a knot he uses. Will also give that a go.

Can't wait for summer to get strreeettccchhhheeedddd.......ha ha. Just fixed up my wind on leaders last night - looking forward to get my tackle tested. Sorted out some new steel traces and blinged it with some red / blue heat wrapps - looking nice and sharp with the Daiichi's - so looking forward to get hooked.

go the albright. well the
go the albright. well the improved albright so you don't have a knot slipping on you under heavy tension, otherwise uni/uni joined together.
