Hi there! On the weekend while fishing, a came across a few massive schools of Milkfish. They were huge buggers, and would love to catch one. Has anyone here caught one before? If so what did you use, and do the put up a good fight??

They're an awesome fight
They're an awesome fight apparently, at least as tough as tuna. Little hooks and berley them up on bread apparently.

Seen the same around a few
Seen the same around a few of the outer islands here too Wade. Schools of massive buggas in the calm spots finning and mooching around, just need to put in some time berleying and baiting them up with bread and see what size gear and hook you can land them on I reckon. Trouble is when you're out in these spots there are bigger fish to play with than Fork-tailed Mullet and that's the mindset I've got to get out of cos they'd be great fun.

BREAD
I think bread only works in Darwin harbour where they are fed by tourists, can't imagine too much bread in their natural enviroment,I think they go for S/W flies

Spot On
Spot on Uncle, though I believe no one, fish or man could pass up a fresh baked loaf of raisin bread!
Plenty around Onslow on the current lines where they seem to feed on small pieces of surface material. Coral spawn, plant matter?
Huge eyes and forked tails, would go like a cut cat I reckon.

milkfish
Can say from experience they are one hell of a good fight.
I scored one once flicking a slice around and accidentally jagged one top of the head right near its mouth so it was like a real hookup. Went absolutely mental and had to give chase as it nearly spooled me. Speed, jumps and stamina all in one torpedo package.
Will have to try find the pic.

Milkfish
If I remember correctly the show that everybody is talking about was on foxtel and it was with Robson Green fishing all over the world. He struggled to hook a milkfish for hours but got over the line in the end. Bread was the winner as everybody else has suggested, and once hooked took off like a cut snake!! Hard to believe that anything that eats bread would go like a rocket!! Good luck, but I believe they are better to catch than to eat!!

Milkfish are fantastic to catch on light gear and they take flies readily.
