i use a 3 way swivel attached to my main line and leader then attach a short piece of light line (10lb) to the ballon, pretty simple and affective

this is "my" balooning rig for up north could use it for metro if you where targeting pelagics.. people will have different versions and mine is a modified version of a mate i used to fish up with at quobba. hope it helps. (btw this is if your using helium, i would recommend it)

For years now I have just been using cotton. Holds onto the balloon no worries and snaps very easy once the bait has been eaten. Works a treat, used it the other day in close catching Sambo's with livies. great to watch, you could tell the Sambo's were there as the herring would go white with fright and sit right on the surface. Within seconds the Sambo's where boffing it from every direction. Once a sambo had hold of the bait and run the cotton would break the fish wouldn't feel any wait and then hook up. Only in 8m so great fun. Used the same method to catch all sorts of things but mainly YKF over on the East.

Stick to mono

Unless you want to be filling a new balloon after every hook up. Can be a fiddleu process to get the right amount of weight to get your bait slapping the surface. That rig above 8 times out of 10 you will keep your balloon unless there are heaps of sharks about which usually results in a bustoff anyway

make sure you cut the tag

make sure you cut the tag off the balloon once tying it, will prevent any tangles. I usually use 2 balloons
