Marron/Trout/Redfin in the southwest
Gday Guys, Im heading down to Margaret River on Friday night, going to see John Butler Trio at Leeuwin Estate on the sat evening. We are also taking a 4 day weekend for Australia Day and will be camping in the southwest.
Can anyone recommend somewhere to stop for a marron/fish on the way back from Margs this weekend. Also can anyone recommend some places to fish/marron/camp in the southwest for the following weekend? I have done some trout fishing with Hardbody lures around Milltown a few years ago and some Marroning around Nannup about 10 years ago. So any advice for locations/fishing techniques would be appreciated.
For Marroning we used to go in the afternoon and leave a handful of chook pellets every 20mts or so on the bank and then would come back after dark with torches/snares, Is this the way to go for marron? Can you snare for them in the day with meat ?

Would be worth a stop at
Would be worth a stop at Harvey Dam as the marron and redfin are everywhere atm. Been picking up redfin consistantly and got my quotta of marron lastnite in no time.
The chook pellet method is the way to go as Harvey is snare only so you'll be fine.
Mind the smell, ive been fishing!

Wellington Dam
I took My bro and a mate who were visiting over xmas to Wellington Dam.. The camping on the waters edge was fantastic- no flys or mozzies! But just to show them I threw a few handfulls of chook pellets in the water and was amased at just how many marron there was 100's... I know there is red fin there but not sure about trout... good luck though and let me know if you find anywhere down there thats worth a visit as I am very unfarmiliar with the south....
Cheers

Wellinton Dam
Went there over australia day long weekend and got 17 redfin... There are trout there but ive never seen one, ive never heard of anyone seeing one, ive never heard of anyone catching one so i dont think there are many in there. But if you go in the river below the dam there are plenty of rainbows.

I have had a few people mention wellington dam now. The missus says no fishing this weekend as we have 4 days in the southwest the next weekend too. I called bullshit on this pointing out the short one lunar cycle marron season opening. I will let you know how it goes, im sure tomorrow there will be an argument about it just about all the way to margaret river on the way down when she sees me pack a rod and kit and marron snare for sunday, but we will see:D If not, it will be full on next weekend with several locations hit.
Anyway, I finally made the choice to get our 4wd engine rebuilt today which will cost a minimum of $5000 which will lead me to spending probably another $5000 over the next two years to reinforce this investment in the vehicles future and make it bulletproof. Im off to sink a few tinnies while I can afford it.
