Marron bait – what to use?

Hi all.

Never been marroning before but thought I would take the little fella for a dose of camping and marroning tomorrow night.

Going down to the Murray River so from what I have read, I can use nets – so now wondering what people’s ideal baits are?

Thanks in advance for any advice or trade secrets you are willing to give up.

Cheers

Brett

Marron bait

Thu, 2013-01-31 09:54

Hi mate,

As for marron bait we have been using Premium burley bucket pellets to good success. Put these in a fine mesh bait bag or stocking attached to the centre of your net. Do be sure to use nets which have the regulation metal base in them. We have them instore if you dont know which they are.

smelly Bait

Thu, 2013-01-31 09:57

My Favourite is a piece of going off poultry ( neck , wing ) inside a stocking with Aniseed Burley Pellets . double wrap with the stockings and securely attached ( cable tie) to centre of net . After pulling nets allways try and place back in same position so incomming marron can't feed on spilt bait and have to go onto net. Have heard from old bushys that soap works well as a bait also ( must be the tallow in it).

Hope you get a few

thanks for the tips

I was actually going to try meat or fish bait so im glad I asked- I had no chance!

I have heard soap as well so I'll probably try a combination of pellets in one net and soap in another and see how it goes.

Cheers

mate the best bait is

Thu, 2013-01-31 16:19

mate the best bait is definantly liver wether its chichen or cow

i have used this and have found that it is the best bait and that pellets dont work very well.

also i dont really see how soap would do anything but kill the animals but gve it a try you never know but just make sure to use liver!

Best Bait ever

Thu, 2013-01-31 13:37

was marron feeding pellets, but they arent easy to get. I got some years ago for my pond with marron in it from a Researcher called Brett O'Brien.

Worked an absolute treat in the dams snaring. Havent used it in the stocking because I havent used drops for ages. But anything does attract them. Wiskas fish cat food can opened with a few screwdriver holes hasnt been mentioned, and works in nets. As do everything else above.

Soap has always been mentioned, but it is a detergent, and I dont advise the use of that in waterways. Just adds to the "runoff waste" pooring into the rivers and dams.

Dont use to much bait as the smell from to much confuses them and they tend to sit off the target. Just use a handful or 2 as mentioned above.

the basic bait i use is cook pellet in a stocking and then you will need to double the stocking over to make it more strength and normly get between 6 to 8 baits out of a pair

and corn on a cobb

Look for a dead rabbit on your travel to the spot and use that and the pellets. The rabbit has plenty of oil in it and works magic on the marron.
