Marlin fishing advice

Sorry, can't help DJ as I've never done it myself. But I'm sure Adam can impart his vast experience - and Paul, Matt (Mako) and Jesse, fresh from their trip can impart their experiences.

Will be an interesting thread once some info comes in.

10-15kg

You will need 10-15kg line for smaller marlin/sails, preferably mono on overheads.  Buy skirted lures as they are very easy to use for the inexperienced.  Once you've hooked one you will need to tire them out before getting to the boat. (not too much thou)  You will need gloves to grab onto the bill, once the hooks out, take a few photos at the side of the boat.  Then put the boat in gear slowly and swim him until he bites down on your hand and starts getting life back in him, let him swim off then shake hands on a fine capture and release. :)

oh and for me personally i prefer lever drag reels like the penns, big shimano's tiagra's etc, make it alot easier, as long as you don't knock them into free spool when there is a fish on the other end rampaging accross the topTongue out

good luck

Good luck DJ. Great to see a young bloke saving his pennies for to chase the big ones with some quality gear. If you go the Tiagra 50 and T Curve you wont have a problem however the bycatch(macks, dollies etc) wont be as much fun. As Adam said go the Skirted lures as you can vary your speed and you have a good chance of big dollies and wahoo(they might take your skirts)but you have to be prepared to lose some gear when going for the big ones. Good luck mate...Luck can play a part in gamefishing.I caught my first marlin in Exmouth on my tinnie with some pretty basic gear and a $20.00 skirt. We hooked 3 and landed 2 that day with a couple of massive dollies while some of the big game boats around us didn't get a sniff and used a lot more fuel than my 25hp Merc. It's what keeps us going back.
