Marine Battery - Optima Blue
Submitted by Tompkins on Thu, 2011-11-10 11:42
Hi everyone
My new Optima Blue has 2 terminals for the + and 2 terminals for the - (each side a short, wide stub and 4 cms away a seperate screw thread protruding)
My previous battery only had 1 terminal for the + and 1 terminal for the - (a short, wide stub with screw thread protruding up through the stub)
My question is, with the Optima Blue, do I somehow have to connect BOTH terminals per side? Or am I ok just connecting the short, wide stubs)?

Do you know why you avoid the terminal lugs rather than the threaded bolts?

im not sure
my mechanic fitted 2 new ones to my boat on Saturday, the bolts are certainly easier to fit all the extra wires to . i would imagine that the bolt and the lead terminal are joined together inside the housing anyway??? so i guess you could use either one oneach side??? cheers (i am no expert mechanic by the way!!LOL!!

My second battery has the
My second battery has the same setup, you'll find this setup on most 'deep cycle' batteries that have a high CCA rating or what they call a dual purpose battery, meaning it can start your engine while having the deep cycle capacity in the one battery. The main terminals are for your large starting lugs(like the clamping ones on your car), and the threaded one is for you accessories, they're just making it easier for you. The positive and negative are both internally connected as you suggested. All of my boats electrical lines have the eyelet type lugs, so i too only use the threaded ones.
