Gday, does anyone here use maggots for bait? What can you catch with them and is it possible to breed them in the cooler months? Also is it possible to breed them without stinking out your whole backyard? Cheers fellas.

Good for fresh / salt water
Great bait for bread and butter species, fished unweighted or under a float/blob - burley certainly helps. As a kid they were my freshwater staple bait in the UK and worked on everything - I have no doubt that redfin / trout and bream (if presented correctly) would no doubt gobble them up. I reckon you would do well in the river on a nice calm day with them.

concur with your comments
yep you are right on Buschy they are an exellent bait, the only problem that I have encounted with them is that the blowfish love them as well and will strip them from your hooks in a blink of an eye. I haven't tried the soft plastic imatation maggots yet, I'll get around to that in the next couple of months

Saltwater species
Thanks for the responses. So bread and butter fish would include skippy and flathead? And it seems the best way to use these is under a bobby float or would a weighted rig do alright too?

Wogs are a good bait, keep
Wogs are a good bait, keep them in the fridge so they dont die, when you go fishing they're excellent for herring, gardies, skippy etc. To keep them jumping around, put some under your tongue, it's nice a warm there and gets them moving pretty good which is what makes them good bait.
Cheers

Breeding your own maggots in
Breeding your own maggots in the cooler months is ok ozmos. It just takes a little longer and you have to make sure you keep them in a fairly warm place away from your house.A spot near the fence of a neighbour you dont like is ideal. (evil grin). A 15 or 20 litre bucket with air holes in the lid is perfect for the stinky part. When the nights are cold insulate your bucket with an old towel or something and during the day put them in a nice warm spot. I hang my bucket on the clothesline if their is no washing out that day. Its usualy about a 7 0r 8 day cycle in the winter.
