Macks and tuna
Hi folks,
ive just had my first shot at rigging up my own lures. I've got some richter jelly babes that I rigged up with 50lb line and some good 3/0 hooks. Double crimped so should hold well.
Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has some pointers. I've never specifically targeted Tuna before, and I'm hoping to get my 1st this weekend. I will be launching from hillarys and generally head to the NE side of rotto. I don't intend to head out further than that (this is where I do my shark fishing and bottom bouncing).
Question is, am I best off trolling around the 3 mile, or heading towards rotto? Should I be looking for working birds or bottom structure? Perhaps both? I will also chuck out a mackie lure or 2 in the spread, will they work together, or are the trolling speeds for both types of lure too different.
i don't want anyone's specific spots (but if you're feeling generous I may as well), but any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

I've caught tuna while trolling for macks so guess they like the same thing! I usually sit on around 6-7 knots

You will find that the ideal
You will find that the ideal speed for divers is around 6 knots where as the skirts are more around 10 - 12 so you can't really troll with both in the same spread. If you're heading out to Rotto how about trolling skirts on the way out then switch to divers once you're out there.

Thanks for the advice! I
Thanks for the advice! I thought it may be the case. At least with skirts I can get there at a reasonable pace, then use the divers while I'm looking for ground while bottom bouncing.
